Senior Manager, Workday Payroll Technology | Montefiore Medical Center
The Tone:
This is a full-time role at Montefiore Medical Center, located in Yonkers, New York. Montefiore is a large, complex health system, and this role is central to its HRIS operations. The Senior Manager will lead the functional strategy, governance, and operational excellence of the Workday Payroll platform. This working management position is crucial for ensuring the platform reliably supports accurate, timely, and compliant payroll operations while driving continuous improvement and enhancement initiatives across the organization.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Team & Vendor Leadership: Manage a team of Workday Payroll consultants, including internal and third-party resources, overseeing work assignment, prioritization, and performance, and serving as the primary point of accountability for deliverables.
• Platform Ownership & Governance: Own the functional roadmap for Workday Payroll, encompassing tax, garnishments, and retro pay, while establishing and enforcing change management, testing, and release governance for all configuration changes.
• Payroll Operations Support: Partner directly with Payroll Operations leadership to ensure the Workday platform supports accurate, timely, and compliant pay processing for a multi-entity, multi-union workforce, leading root cause analysis for system issues.
• Compliance & Risk Management: Ensure Workday Payroll configuration remains compliant with federal, New York State, and local tax and wage regulations, as well as union/CBA pay rules, and proactively manage impacts from Workday releases.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Act as the primary liaison between Payroll, HR Technology, Finance, and IT on all Workday Payroll-related initiatives, supporting integration design and issue resolution with upstream and downstream systems.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Human Resources, Business, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience; Managerial or team leadership capacity.
• Experience: 7+ years of experience supporting Workday Payroll in a functional/techno-functional capacity, including at least 2–3 years in a people leadership or team management role, with demonstrated experience overseeing consultants; Experience supporting payroll in a large, multi-entity or unionized environment.
• Skills: Deep functional knowledge of Workday Payroll, including pay components, tax setup, garnishments, off-cycles, retro pay, and payroll accounting; Strong understanding of federal, New York State, and local payroll compliance requirements; Excellent stakeholder management skills.
• Bonus: Experience in a healthcare or academic medical center environment; Workday Payroll certification(s); Experience with UKG Time Tracking and/or Workday Payroll integrations; Familiarity with SOX controls and audit processes related to payroll systems.
