Senior Legal Specialist – Card Litigation | Capital One
The Tone:
This is a full-time hybrid role at Capital One, located in McLean, VA, with Richmond, VA also available. Capital One is a large financial services company managing a significant card portfolio. This role is essential for navigating and managing defensive litigation within the Card Litigation portfolio, directly supporting legal counsel and mitigating risk for the organization.

• Team: Reports to a lawyer on the card litigation team
• Mission: Manages a portfolio of defensive litigation matters to mitigate risk for the company.
• Tech Stack: Google Workspace (Gmail, Google Docs, Drive), Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
What You’ll Actually Do
• Litigation Analysis: Review and analyze defensive litigation matters, including complaints, significant matters, motions, discovery, disputes, and fraud claims.
• Information Gathering: Perform research to independently gather internal documents and information relevant to cases.
• Strategy Support: Support internal and external legal counsel in identifying relevant account information and developing litigation strategies.
• Counsel Interaction: Manage interactions with external counsel and perform necessary research to respond to complaints, counterclaims, and discovery requests.
• Caseload Management: Work a high volume caseload, managing competing priorities, and meeting litigation deadlines to ensure efficient and effective case handling.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Senior level role requiring a High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent certification, with core knowledge of consumer finance laws, collection laws, and regulations.
• Experience: At least 2 years of experience in a paralegal role within an in-house legal department or law firm.
• Skills: Excellent problem solving, judgment, and decision-making skills; excellent organizational skills and ability to work independently; excellent communication and influencing skills, both written and verbal; capability to anticipate and resolve problems quickly and independently; ability to properly prioritize workload and meet litigation deadlines.
• Bonus: 3+ years of paralegal experience with a background in litigation; 1+ year of experience managing external legal counsel; 2+ years of experience using either Google Workspace or Microsoft Office.
