Job Description: Security Officer: Self Defense Instructor
The SEIU 32BJ Training Fund is actively seeking part-time Security Officer: Self Defense instructors to deliver classes within the New York City metropolitan area.
Job Summary/Purpose:
This role involves empowering security professionals through the instruction of industry skills, with a particular focus on self-defense. The ideal candidate will be a creative, dynamic instructor with a background in security or law enforcement training, specifically including self-defense. They should possess a passion for teaching and enjoy working with diverse linguistic and cultural groups.
Key Responsibilities:
• Develop and implement lesson plans that are in line with the provided curriculum and incorporate specified educational materials.
• Deliver course content using a student-centered teaching approach.
• Adhere to applicable agency curriculum requirements.
• Co-teach with one or two other instructors when required.
• Maintain and submit accurate records of attendance.
• Maintain ongoing communication with their supervisor.
• Participate in relevant professional development activities as they become available.
Qualifications:
• Required Education: High School diploma or its equivalent.
• Required Experience:
• 3-5 years of related Security Officer/Law Enforcement experience.
• Experience teaching self-defense training to adult learners, specifically within law enforcement and security personnel contexts.
• Preferred Certifications/Experience:
• Preference given to candidates with NYS Security Guard Instructor’s certification from NYS DCJS.
• CPR/AED/First Aid Instructor certification from American Heart Association is a plus.
Other Qualifications and Skills:
• Proficiency in both Spanish and English is preferred.
• Flexible schedule, with a willingness to work nights and weekends.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively interact with students from various linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
• Proficiency in using digital platforms for instruction, communication, and recording program data.
COVID-19 Considerations:
• Candidates must provide a record of completed COVID-19 vaccination or a confirmed medical/religious exemption form from the organization prior to interviewing.
• Compliance with the organization’s current COVID-19 protocols is mandatory.
Classes Offered:
Instructors may be assigned to teach a variety of classes, including:
• Self Defense
• 8-Hour Annual In-Service Trainings
• CPR/AED/First Aid
• Other security and life safety related classes, as deemed appropriate and available.
Location(s):
• Classes are primarily conducted at the Training Fund’s Manhattan location.
• Other locations within New York City will be utilized depending on the class schedule.
• Instructors must be willing to travel occasionally to off-site locations within the greater New York City metropolitan area.
Compensation:
• $75 per teaching hour for classes requiring instructor certifications.
• $50 per hour for non-teaching activities, such as professional development.
• Paid preparation time.
• Paid in-house training, coaching, and professional development opportunities.
• Paid travel time to off-site or employer locations.
Salary Range:
• $50 to $75 (USD) Hourly
