Safety Department Intern
Overview
As a Safety Department Intern, you will play a crucial role in providing comprehensive administrative and safety support to our jobsite operations. This position requires excellent clerical skills for tasks of moderate to advanced difficulty within the Safety Department. You will be responsible for supporting essential safety functions, assisting the Safety Manager and Safety Coordinator in all safety-related matters to ensure a safe and compliant work environment.
Location & Travel
- Interns have the potential to be placed on a project site located in any state throughout the US.
- This is a 12-week internship on your assigned project.
- We offer a designated daily per diem in addition to base pay to support and help you cover living expenses, along with a $750 one-time taxable mobilization stipend to assist with relocation expenses.

Key Responsibilities
Administrative, Employee Information and Reporting:
- Assist with entering drug and alcohol testing results.
- Scan employment documentation and log into the system as needed.
- Assist in preparing employee Department of Transportation Drug and Alcohol files.
- Maintain databases for classroom training sessions and safety training courses in the office and field for jobs without a Site Safety Coordinator.
- Assist in the preparation of meetings and presentations.
- Coordinate and present safety training to support Company and client requirements, including planning, documentation, and presentation (e.g., New Hire Orientation and other training dependent on experience and knowledge).
- Ensure all necessary documentation is printed and scanned for crew members when needed.
Safety Compliance:
- Work directly with the Site Safety Coordinator and management team to develop, implement, and maintain an effective site-specific safety plan.
- Communicate with the Safety Manager regarding safety matters.
- Attend weekly general safety meetings, weekly supervisor’s safety meetings, and daily gang box meetings, as required.
- Participate in the jobsite R4 Safety Committee as required.
- Act as a backup drug and alcohol collector.
- Create and update new hire safety binders and manuals.
- Maintain current safety information in Excel and pull safety records and statistics when needed.
- Order, track, and ship supplies (e.g., stickers, posters, PPE) where needed.
- Maintain jobsite first aid and emergency response supplies.
- Understand all environmental permitting regulations and measures to ensure compliance.
Qualifications
Education and Work Experience Requirements:
- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s program studying Safety Management, Occupational Safety, Construction Management, or a related field.
- Maintain a GPA of 2.9 or higher.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
- Committed to taking reasonable care for your own and others’ health and safety, actively working toward The Company’s Zero Injury principles.
- Functional computer skills and advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint as required to manage the safety program.
- Ability to type and write reports with accuracy and appropriate grammar.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and the ability to multi-task effectively.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from employees.
- Familiarity with MSHA and OSHA regulations or a general safety background is helpful.
