Roadway Maintenance Technician | VDOT

The Tone:
This is a full-time, essential role at VDOT. VDOT is dedicated to ensuring the safety and efficiency of Virginia’s transportation network through the construction and maintenance of its roadways. As a Roadway Maintenance Technician, you are crucial to keeping the Commonwealth’s roads clear, safe, and operational, especially during emergency situations and adverse weather conditions.

• Mission: This role ensures the safety and operational efficiency of Virginia’s roadways through equipment operation, maintenance, and emergency response.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Operate and maintain light, medium, and heavy-duty highway equipment and vehicles to perform routine maintenance, construction tasks, and emergency operations such as snow and ice removal or debris clearing.
• Perform essential manual labor, utilizing a variety of hand and power tools, to complete roadway maintenance and construction projects as an active member of a crew.
• Conduct pre-trip inspections and execute preventive maintenance, repair, and replacement tasks on equipment to ensure its readiness and longevity.
• Implement and maintain comprehensive job site safety, including determining and demonstrating proper work site protection techniques, identifying hazards, wearing appropriate PPE, and adhering to VDOT safety regulations and MUTCD standards.
• Install, maintain, and remove traffic control devices for work zones, detours, and lane closures in assigned areas, ensuring strict adherence to MUTCD standards, and assist with inventory tracking and record-keeping for these devices.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Core domain knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures. Must possess the ability to perform heavy manual labor.
• Experience: Ability to obtain a valid CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain them thereafter, complying with all DOT and VDOT policies.
• Skills: Proficient in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools, as well as light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair. Possesses knowledge and practical application of work zone safety, traffic controls, flagging operations, and the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
• Bonus: A valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements. Experience in emergency operations including snow removal, storm response, and accident clean-up. Experience in roadway maintenance and construction. Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs.
