Job Description

Job Title: Rail and Transit Engineering Designer Intern

Location: Chicago office

Internship Period: Fall of 2025

Job Summary:
This internship offers an opportunity for a student to join TYLin’s Chicago office as a Rail and Transit Engineering Designer intern. The intern will gain immersion in diverse projects by assisting engineers and engineering staff in various project support roles. It is described as a chance to be part of a collaborative community, expanding knowledge and sharpening skills through hands-on, meaningful work.

Responsibilities (“What You Will Do”):
Familiarization: Become familiar with engineering plans and details.
Quantity Take-offs: Perform quantity take-offs.
Project Support: Assist with project monitoring and scheduling.
Computer Modeling: Assist with computer modeling.
Reporting: Assist with producing progress reports.
Collaboration: Collaborate with other engineers, drafters, and support staff.
Production Assistance: Assist in the production of engineering drawings, calculations, and cost estimates, under the close supervision of senior engineers.
Standards Application: Apply the use of proper codes and standards in the production of engineering deliverables.
Site Visits: Attend site visits or inspections.

Organizational Skills: Exceptional organizational and time management skills, with a proven ability to efficiently prioritize and manage multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously.
Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of producing clear documentation and interacting professionally with clients and colleagues.
Work Ethic: Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while also effectively collaborating in a team environment.
Integrity: Strong commitment to integrity, consistently demonstrating ethical, fair, and responsible behavior.
Learning Orientation: Commitment to innovation and continuous learning, with a passion for acquiring new skills and driving improvements.

Education and Experience:
Education: Requires current 3rd-year standing as an undergraduate, or a Graduate student standing, in an accredited Civil Engineering program.
Software Skills: Experience with MS Word and Excel.
Engineering Software Knowledge: Knowledge of Bluebeam, OpenRoads, AutoCAD, and MicroStation is required.
