Program Associate, Democracy Initiatives | Brennan Center for Justice

The Tone:
This is a full-time role at Brennan Center for Justice, located in New York, NY. The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law is a nonpartisan law and policy institute that works to improve the systems of democracy and justice in the United States. This Program Associate supports the cutting-edge projects of the Democracy Initiatives team, which launches projects to defend and improve American democracy. The role is central to the team’s ability to achieve its key goals through essential administrative, research, and operational duties.

• Mission: This person supports the Democracy Initiatives team by performing administrative, research, and operational duties critical to defending and improving American democracy.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Research & Content Production: Provide research, writing, fact-checking, and proofreading assistance to support the preparation of articles, speeches, reports, op-eds, and blog posts, with opportunities for named authorship.
• Information Synthesis & Communication: Collect and synthesize information and assist in drafting outlines, memos, talking points, presentations, correspondence, and other team communications.
• Logistics & Event Management: Provide administrative, logistics, and project management support for external events, meetings, and convenings, and organize internal meetings including calendaring, distributing materials, and note-taking.
• Operational & Administrative Support: Manage scheduling, process expense reports and invoices, arrange travel, coordinate team events and logistics, and work collaboratively with key internal stakeholders.

The Must-Haves
• Background: A bachelor’s degree is required. While this is an entry-level position, lawyers will not be considered. An undergraduate or graduate background in history, political science, or related disciplines is a bonus.
• Experience: Preference for 1-2 years’ work experience. Demonstrated event planning or project management experience is also required.
• Skills: Exceptional writing, research, and analytical skills are essential. Candidates must possess excellent organizational skills, the ability to multi-task, keen attention to detail, and a proven ability to meet deadlines. A high-level of professionalism, integrity, discretion, and judgment is also necessary.
• Bonus: A passion for defending and improving our democracy. Openness to receiving and implementing feedback and accepting strategic direction from organizational management. Comfort with taking initiative.
