Job Title: Planning Intern

Position Overview:
The Planning Intern plays a crucial and supportive role within the Planning Division of the Village of Los Lunas. This position is designed to assist with a wide range of daily planning activities, serving as a pivotal part of the division’s smooth and effective operation. It also offers a valuable learning opportunity for individuals interested in urban planning, providing practical experience in a municipal setting. The internship is a part-time position, requiring 20 hours per week.

Key Responsibilities:

Application Management:
• Assist the Planning Division team with preliminary reviews of planning and zoning applications.
• Contribute to the coordination of inter-departmental reviews for various applications, ensuring efficient communication and timely processing.
Public Hearing Coordination:
• Assist in the preparation and organization of public hearing documents, notices, and all related materials for various planning initiatives.
Customer Service:
• Help the Planning Division provide exceptional, courteous, and informed customer service to the public, stakeholders, and applicants. This includes offering guidance on planning procedures and responding to inquiries.
GIS and Data Management:
• Complete Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping tasks, focusing on data management and graphic design. This involves creating and maintaining spatial data, maps, and other visual aids.
Project Support:
• Support the implementation of various planning projects, workshops, meetings, and hearings as needed.
• Provide assistance to the Code Enforcement Division and/or Economic Development Division with specific project-based tasks and general inquiries.
Record Keeping:
• Assist with the maintenance of organized records and documentation pertinent to all planning activities.
Professional Development:
• Actively engage in professional development opportunities within the division, learning from experienced planners.
• Participate in training sessions, workshops, and knowledge-sharing initiatives to enhance skills and understanding of planning practices.

Qualifications:

Educational Background:
• Currently enrolled in, or a recent graduate of, a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program in Planning, Urban Studies, Geography, or a closely related field that provides foundational knowledge of planning practices.
Interest & Passion:
• Demonstrated strong interest in urban planning, land use, and community development.
• Eagerness to contribute to planning initiatives and gain practical experience in the field.
• Willingness to learn Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for spatial analysis and mapping.
Skills & Abilities:
Organizational Skills: Excellent organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
Communication: Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, coupled with a courteous and professional demeanor.
Technical Proficiency: Basic proficiency in using standard office software (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
