Position Summary:
This position offers pediatric hospital pharmacy work experience to pharmacy students currently enrolled in a college or school of pharmacy, at any Phoenix Children’s pharmacy location. The individual, under the supervision of a registered pharmacist, will participate in the daily activities of the medication use process and provide comprehensive pharmacy services to patients ranging from neonates to young adults. The role involves performing duties as defined by the Arizona State Board of Pharmacy Administrative Code and receives supervision from inpatient pharmacy leaders.
Position Duties:
The Pharmacy Intern’s responsibilities primarily involve preparing, dispensing, and delivering medications, while also engaging in patient care and quality assurance activities. Key duties include:
• Assisting in accurately preparing and labeling medications in accordance with Board of Pharmacy regulations and department policy, deferring to a Pharmacist when appropriate.
• Verifying accuracy of prepared medications under pharmacist supervision before dispensing.
• Delivering medications and supplies to patient areas according to hospital and department timelines.
• Restocking automated dispensing cabinets and managing medication stock (rotation, removing expired items) in patient care areas and medication rooms.
• Ensuring adherence to departmental policies and procedures.
• Processing medication orders timely and ensuring dispensed products meet quality guidelines.
• Verifying that patients receive ordered medications correctly regarding dose, route, salt, regimen, and generic substitution.
• Accurately completing Controlled Substance Documentation Records and maintaining investigational drug study records.
• Acting as a liaison between Pharmacy and medical/nursing staff under direct pharmacist supervision, identifying and intervening in drug therapy issues (e.g., allergies, drug interactions, therapeutic duplication, adverse drug reactions).
• Ensuring appropriateness of all medication doses based on patient’s diagnosis, weight/body surface area, age, allergies, and drug interactions.
• Verifying appropriateness of medication selected and recommending initiation of drug therapy when necessary.
• Evaluating non-formulary medication requests and suggesting equally efficacious but less expensive therapy.
• Performing medication reconciliation through oral consultation with patients/caregivers and documenting collected history.
• Initiating and processing medication incident reports and adverse drug reaction reports; participating in departmental data collection and reporting for Drug Use Evaluation, Quality Assurance, and Performance Improvement activities.
• Completing annual aseptic technique certification.
• Serving professionally on unit-based clinical teams and monitoring patients for optimal therapeutic outcomes.
• Performing miscellaneous job-related duties as requested.
Position Qualifications:
• Education (Required): Currently enrolled and in good standing at a school or college of pharmacy.
• Experience (Preferred): Previous experience working as a pharmacy technician in an acute care or outpatient setting.
• Additional Requirements (Required): Current licensure as a Pharmacy Intern or Graduate Intern with Arizona State Board of Pharmacy.
