Patient Flow Specialist | Indiana University Health
The Tone:
This is a full-time, hybrid role at Indiana University Health, located in Indianapolis, IN, primarily covering IU Health Methodist Hospital and IU Health University Hospital. Indiana University Health is a large healthcare organization committed to delivering comprehensive patient care. This role is crucial for ensuring the smooth and efficient placement and transition of patients across hospital units, directly impacting patient experience and optimizing operational flow.

• Mission: Manages the daily flow of patients by assigning new admissions, handling transfers, and coordinating team censuses to optimize hospital operations.
• Tech Stack: Cerner, Microsoft Teams, Excel
What You’ll Actually Do
• Patient Assignment: Assign new patient admissions from overnight business to appropriate medical teams.
• System Entry: Add assigned team orders and patient information into the Cerner system.
• Census Calculation: Calculate the daily patient census for various hospital units and specific teams.
• Communication & Triage: Communicate new patient business, consults, and transfers to relevant teams and triage incoming calls throughout the day.
• Documentation: Prepare necessary patient paperwork for the next day for University Hospital, Methodist Hospital, and ICU units.
The Must-Haves
• Background: High school diploma or equivalent, with core domain knowledge of hospital operations such as admitting, bed management, or patient placement.
• Experience: Previous experience in admitting, bed management, patient placement/throughput, or similar hospital operations is preferred, including familiarity with demographic and payer-related financial requirements.
• Skills: Proficiency in Cerner, strong Microsoft Teams and Excel skills, excellent communication abilities, detail-oriented, and ability to prioritize multiple workflows effectively.
• Bonus: Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant or LPN program, ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively, and strong interpersonal skills for professional interaction with physicians, leadership, and nursing staff.
