Paid Internship Opportunities | New Jersey Judiciary

The Tone:
This is a paid internship opportunity with the New Jersey Judiciary, located in the Union Vicinage (Elizabeth, NJ). The Judiciary is an 8500-member organization committed to upholding the highest standards of independence, integrity, fairness, and quality service. Interns will join a dedicated team engaged in work that has purpose, meaning, and genuinely makes a difference in the lives of the public. This role contributes directly to building public trust and confidence in the court system, encompassing critical issues such as bail reform, marijuana decriminalization, and recovery court. Interns will gain broad insight and knowledge of the court system while supporting essential administrative and clerical operations.

• Mission: Support the New Jersey court system by performing a variety of administrative, clerical, and customer service duties, contributing to the efficient operation of various court divisions.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Document Processing: Prepare and process filings for judge and staff review, including efficient document retrieval, filing, and providing necessary materials to chambers. This also involves assisting with tasks such as making photocopies to support various court proceedings.
• Communication & Outreach: Act as a key point of contact by answering phones, returning phone calls, receiving and distributing voicemails, and assisting with direct client contact for newly assigned cases and reminders to ensure timely and effective communication.
• Data Research & Entry: Conduct thorough research on caseloads, perform computer-related work including data lookups, and accurately collect and enter data to maintain comprehensive and up-to-date court records.
• Administrative Coordination: Provide essential administrative support by drafting correspondences and memos, managing calendars to schedule appointments and hearings, and moderating virtual hearings to facilitate court proceedings.
• Customer Service & Project Assistance: Deliver quality customer service to all personnel, clients, and members of the public, treating everyone with dignity and respect, and contribute to various special projects as directed by staff to enhance court operations.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Hold at least thirty completed credit hours from an accredited college or university towards a degree. Internships within Pre-Trial Services specifically require candidates to be pursuing a degree or certificate in Behavioral Sciences, Social Sciences, or a closely related field.
• Experience: Demonstrated capability to perform a variety of clerical, administrative, supportive, and customer service duties, along with an ability to manage tasks such as data entry, filing, and general office support.
• Skills: Strong organizational skills for document management and calendar coordination, effective verbal and written communication for drafting memos and client interactions, proficiency in data entry and computer-related work, and a commitment to providing excellent customer service.
• Required Document: An unofficial college or university transcript must be submitted as a mandatory part of your application for consideration, detailing your academic progress.
