Data Center Technician, Global Server Operations | Google
The Tone:
This is a full-time role at Google, located in the US, with required travel. Google’s Hardware Operations team is responsible for maintaining the advanced physical infrastructure that powers Google’s search technology and global services. This role is crucial for delivering AI and infrastructure at unparalleled scale, efficiency, and reliability, supporting everything from cutting-edge AI models to billions of Google users worldwide. You will contribute to the foundational platforms that enable Google’s groundbreaking innovations and future development.
The TL;DR
• Role: Full Time
• Type: Shift-based, non-standard hours including weekends, night shifts, and holidays
• Location: In-person – US (Travel required)
• Pay: $86000–$118000 yearly + 15% bonus target + equity + benefits
• Team: Hardware Operations team, within the AI and Infrastructure team
• Mission: Install, maintain, and troubleshoot Google’s critical data center hardware and software infrastructure to ensure operational excellence.
• Tech Stack: Servers, server components, Google’s Linux cluster, networks, routers, hubs, bridges, switches, networking protocols
What You’ll Actually Do
• Deploy Infrastructure: Install, configure, test, and maintain hardware like servers and their components, along with server software such as Google’s Linux cluster.
• Configure Networks: Take on the setup and configuration of complex networking components including routers, hubs, bridges, switches, and associated protocols.
• Troubleshoot and Repair: Diagnose and resolve straightforward issues with equipment or infrastructure by following established data center procedures and applying necessary resources.
• Ensure Data Integrity: Maintain the security and integrity of data and track various forms of media to verify compliance with Google’s security standards, such as proper data erasure.
• Decommission Equipment: Disassemble specific equipment that has reached its end-of-life, either due to part replacement or scheduled maintenance, typically in a team environment.
The Must-Haves
• Background: This is an operations role requiring experience with component-level repairs and a foundational understanding of technical equipment troubleshooting.
• Experience: Experience performing component-level repairs and troubleshooting on technical equipment. Experience diagnosing and troubleshooting one of the following: operating systems, computer/server hardware, or networking protocols. Ability to work non-standard hours, including weekends, nights, and holidays, and travel as operationally required.
• Skills: Component-level repair, troubleshooting (operating systems, computer/server hardware, or networking protocols), and configuration of network components.
• Bonus: A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience. Completion of the online Google IT Support Professional Certificate program. At least 2 years of experience diagnosing and troubleshooting operating systems, computer/server hardware, or networking protocols. Experience with component-level repairs on IT equipment or in a similar role (e.g., Systems Administration, Network Deployment Engineer, Help Desk Technician). Prior experience working within a data center or network operation center environment.
