What We Look For In an Elementary School Math Tutor

  • Advanced Subject Mastery:
    • Deep knowledge of core elementary math concepts including number sense, place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, basic fractions and decimals, measurement, time, money, geometry shapes, patterns, and introductory data interpretation.
    • Ability to effectively explain counting strategies, regrouping, and fact fluency to build strong arithmetic foundations essential for upper elementary and middle school readiness.

    • Proficient in guiding students through skip counting, place value understanding, basic geometric reasoning, and measurement conversions.
    • Emphasizes discovery-based learning and connects mathematical concepts to everyday contexts such as cooking, shopping, and telling time.
  • Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction:
    • Familiar with elementary math standards for grades one through five.
    • Aware of common challenges students face, such as regrouping in subtraction, understanding fractions as parts of a whole, and memorizing multiplication facts.
    • Ability to adapt instruction using base-ten blocks, fraction strips, games, and multi-sensory approaches to support young learners at varying developmental readiness levels.
  • Effective Teaching Methods:
    • Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with.
    • Proficiency in explaining material using multiple approaches and adapting instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles.
  • Communication & Engagement:
    • Strong communication skills.
