What We Look For In a College Math Tutor
- Advanced Subject Mastery:
- Deep knowledge of college-level algebra, functions and graphs, trigonometric concepts, introductory statistics, finite mathematics, linear programming, and mathematical modeling.
- Ability to explain quantitative reasoning, set theory, logic, and probability.
- Proficiency in preparing students to meet general education mathematics requirements and apply math in diverse academic disciplines.
- Conceptual Teaching & Problem-Solving:

- Ability to guide students through interpreting data sets, constructing logical arguments, solving optimization problems, and applying mathematics to social sciences and business.
- Emphasis on quantitative literacy and critical thinking over procedural memorization, particularly for non-STEM college students.
- Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction:
- Familiarity with college math curricula, including liberal arts math and quantitative reasoning courses.
- Understanding of common challenges such as function notation, basic probability, and interpreting statistical graphs.
- Ability to adapt instruction using real-world contexts, technology tools, and scaffolded problem sets to support adult learners and students with varying mathematical backgrounds.
- Effective Teaching Methods:
- Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with and explain material using multiple approaches.
- Capacity to adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles.
- Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style.
- Ability to adapt to different learning styles and student needs.
