Job Description: On Call Early Career Archaeology Field Technician
WSP is seeking motivated and talented individuals for On Call Early Career Archaeology Field Technician (heritage resource specialist) positions. This is an exciting opportunity to join our Earth & Environment Cultural Resource Team, contributing to projects across Arizona and New Mexico, with potential future work in adjacent states.
These hourly, project-based roles offer a chance to become an integral part of a growing organization dedicated to solving complex cultural resource challenges for our clients.
Opportunity Overview
As an Early Career On Call Archaeology Field Technician, you will work closely with supervisory field staff and senior archaeologists. Your primary responsibilities will involve completing assigned survey and mitigation tasks, which include:
- Archaeological surveys (Class I-Class III assessments)
- Site testing
- Data recovery efforts
- Project monitoring
Successful candidates will collaborate with environmental and heritage/cultural resources specialists throughout the Western United States. Current and upcoming project contributions are specifically needed in Arizona and New Mexico, with expectations for future fieldwork opportunities in surrounding states.
These positions require active participation in fieldwork and the crucial task of supporting the collection and preparation of digital data for reporting findings. Experience with various digital data collection software and hardware is expected, as is contributing to the completion of state IMACS forms.
Compensation will be commensurate with credentials and experience, falling within the specified hourly pay rate range.
Your Impact & Key Responsibilities
In this role, your contributions will be essential for successful project execution and compliance:
- Participation in Class I-Class III assessments and development of avoidance recommendations for cultural resources.
- Contributing to heritage/cultural resource investigations in support of client projects. These efforts mandate strict compliance with relevant federal, state, and local laws and regulations, including:
- National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)
- National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA)
- Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA)
- Other pertinent state and local statutes.
- Regular travel to project sites primarily within Arizona and New Mexico. Per diem will be provided for travel.
Who You Are – Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Education: BA/BS degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, History, or a related field. An MS/MA degree is preferred.
- Experience: 0-1 years of professional-level experience researching, analyzing, developing, and managing archaeological and historic preservation plans, staff, and resources.
- Interpersonal Skills: Excellent interpersonal skills with a proven ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Communication: Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Regulatory Knowledge: Working knowledge of cultural resources and environmental regulations.
- Archaeological Knowledge: Working knowledge of North American archaeology.
- Software Proficiency: Experience with SharePoint and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Legal Frameworks: Experience with NHPA, ARPA (Archaeological Resources Protection Act), NAGPRA, and relevant state laws.
- Physical Demands:
- Ability to perform extensive pedestrian surveys.
- Ability to carry up to 25 lbs. of personal gear and company equipment over varied terrain.
- Ability to survey effectively in hot, dry, high-desert conditions.
- Field Skills: Experience identifying and analyzing a wide variety of archaeological materials from prehistoric and historic-period archaeological sites in the field.
- Travel & Logistics:
- Must be willing to travel to remote project locations for 10-day rotations.
- Possibly required to camp at remote project locations.
- Compliance: Must pass a background check and successfully complete WSP’s Motor Vehicle screening.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous work experience in the western United States.
- Experience with large-scale terrestrial survey projects is a plus.
- Previous Great Basin and/or Southwestern-specific fieldwork experience is a significant advantage, though not required.
Compensation
Hourly Pay Rate Range: $26.00 – $30.00
