Job Description:
• Opportunity: A great opportunity for December 2025 nursing graduates to begin their nursing careers at Aurora St. Luke’s on the Neuro Medical Stroke and Seizures Unit (10LM).
• Unit Focus: 10LM is a 22-bed neuro-medical unit specializing in stroke and seizure disorders. The unit is part of the Comprehensive Stroke Program and manages video EEG monitoring for patients with seizures.
• Externship to Graduate Nurse Transition: The position begins as a Nurse Extern, providing hands-on experience in a fast-paced, moderate acuity unit. Upon completion of the externship, the Nurse Extern will transition to a Graduate Nurse position within the same department and team.
• Staffing: The department is fully staffed with nurses committed to the development and growth of new nurses in preparation for their RN roles. The unit does not utilize travelers or agency staff.
• Responsibilities:
• Completing activities of daily living, vital sign monitoring, and blood glucose monitoring under the observation of a Registered Nurse.
• Collaborating with the Registered Nurse to establish a plan of care based on patient needs and preferences.
• Evaluating patient response to interventions and communicating observations to the Registered Nurse.
• Developing delegation skills appropriate to Health Unit Coordinators, Nursing Assistants, and technical roles.
• Administering medication as delegated by the Registered Nurse after evaluation of clinical judgment and proficiency.
• Managing an increased number of patients and incorporating time management principles.
• Collecting and synthesizing relevant patient data to accurately identify patient status and needs.
• Participating in emergency situations under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, within areas of demonstrated knowledge and skill.
• Performing patient positioning and transporting duties, which require lifting and pushing/pulling, while utilizing proper technique.
• Demonstrating knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care, including understanding the principles of growth and development.
• Requirements:
• Currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program (final year) or a graduate of an accredited nursing program.
• Successful completion of a Medical Surgical Course, which includes pharmacological concepts.
• Good interpersonal skills and the ability to adapt to interruptions and changing priorities.
• Must be able to provide an unofficial school transcript with med surg and pharmacology course.
• Physical Requirements:
• Must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, and reach above shoulders during the work shift.
• Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs from floor to waist, lift up to 20 lbs over the head, and carry up to 40 lbs a reasonable distance.
• Must be able to push/pull with 30 lbs of force and perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs with a second person present.
• Must have functional vision and hearing.
• Working Conditions:
• Exposure to mechanical, electrical, chemical, and radiation hazards as well as blood and body fluids on a continuous basis; therefore, protective clothing must be worn as necessary.
• Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
