Job Title: Network and Security Engineer

Role Summary

As a Network and Security Engineer at Gannon University, you will be a critical member of our IT infrastructure team, responsible for designing, implementing, maintaining, and securing our complex network and server environments. This role demands a strong blend of networking expertise, robust security acumen, and proficiency in server administration across both on-premises and cloud platforms. You will play a key role in ensuring the availability, performance, and security of critical university systems, contributing directly to our mission of academic excellence.

Key Responsibilities & Expertise

  • Network Engineering:
    • Manage and configure routing and switching devices (Cisco, MikroTik, Juniper).
    • Implement and maintain advanced networking concepts including TCP/IP, VLANs, NAT, ACLs, Load Balancing, Failover, BGP, and OSPF.
    • Design and manage VPN solutions (IPsec/L2TP/PPTP) for secure remote access and site-to-site connectivity.
    • Develop and optimize network segmentation strategies to enhance security and performance.
    • Conduct infrastructure monitoring and troubleshooting to ensure optimal network health and uptime.
  • Network Security:
    • Design, implement, and manage firewall policies using various platforms (Fortinet, Cyberoam).
    • Implement Zero Trust principles in network design and access control.
    • Perform threat detection, traffic monitoring, and intrusion prevention.
    • Manage Web Application Firewalls (WAF) for application-level security.
    • Lead incident response efforts and provide critical production support for security events.
    • Administer Identity Access Management (IAM) systems.
  • Systems Administration:
    • Administer Windows Server environments, including Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) and Identity Access Control.
    • Manage Linux servers (Ubuntu, RHEL, CentOS, AlmaLinux) for various services.
    • Oversee DNS and DHCP services.
    • Administer mail servers (Postfix/Dovecot) and file servers.
    • Manage IP-PBX and VoIP infrastructure.
  • Cloud & Virtualization:
    • Work with AWS cloud infrastructure, including fundamental knowledge of Lambda, IAM, WAF, EC2, and S3.
    • Manage and maintain virtualized environments using Proxmox, VMware ESXi, and Hyper-V.
    • Implement and secure serverless architectures in cloud environments.
  • Programming & Tools:
    • Utilize scripting and programming skills in Python, Java, JavaScript, C++, SQL/PLSQL, and JSON for automation and system management.
    • Employ monitoring tools such as LibreNMS.
    • Leverage data analysis tools like Power BI.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Certifications (Desired):
    • CCNA
    • JNCIA
    • MTCNA

Qualifications & Experience

  • Proven experience in researching and developing prototype logic for secure data transmission optimization across various network components (data centers, routers, security controls). This includes a demonstrated ability to improve network throughput efficiency.
  • Demonstrated expertise in designing and testing secure path reservation algorithms and real-time traffic flow optimization models, specifically within complex, enterprise-scale network environments.
  • Experience in authoring and co-authoring technical documentation and conference publications, particularly under faculty supervision, showcasing advanced research capabilities in network security and cloud infrastructure.
