The Tone:
This is a temporary, intermittent internship at the California Department of State Hospitals, located in San Bernardino, CA, specifically at Patton State Hospital. The Department of State Hospitals operates facilities that provide treatment for individuals with mental illness who require care in a secure setting. This role is crucial as it directly contributes to patient care and rehabilitation through music therapy, supporting their restoration, maintenance, and development of capabilities under expert supervision.

• Type: Temporary, Intermittent (6 months / 1056 hours maximum in a 12-month period)
• Location: In-person, San Bernardino, CA
• Pay: $18.27–$24.62 hourly
• Team: Reports to a Board-Certified Music Therapist, under clinical supervision of the Music Therapy Internship Director and administrative supervision of the Chief, Rehabilitation Therapy Service.
• Mission: To provide therapeutic music services that support the restoration, maintenance, and development of patient capabilities within a mental health setting.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Administer: Deliver Music Therapy services by applying principles, procedures, techniques, and current trends to patient care.
• Facilitate: Support patients in the process of restoring, maintaining, and developing their capabilities through targeted music interventions.
• Document: Systematically secure accurate clinical data, compose clear and concise reports, and interpret statistical findings.
• Analyze: Accurately assess situations involving patient care and take effective action based on clinical observations and data.
• Collaborate: Establish and maintain confidence and cooperation with colleagues and patients, ensuring effective communication within the workplace.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Entry-Level position requiring academic eligibility for a Music Therapy Internship, including completion of requisite coursework and pre-internship clinical hours through an American Music Therapy Association-approved university program.
• Experience: Possess basic knowledge of Music Therapy principles, procedures, techniques, trends, and literature; fundamental understanding of restoration processes and mental health education; familiarity with public health and welfare agencies, characteristics of various disorders, and relevant federal and state programs.
• Skills: Demonstrate functional music skills in singing while playing guitar and keyboard through a required 5–10-minute live audition; ability to utilize and apply required knowledge effectively; strong analytical skills to interpret data and situations; effective verbal and written communication abilities.
