About the Job: Motorsports Tire Engineer

The Motorsports Tire Engineer will be a key contributor to the application and development of fundamental and advanced tire models. This role involves capturing and quantifying real-world operating behaviors for various motorsports applications. Responsibilities include generating and fitting tire models from lab data, scaling and validating these fits to ensure real-world correlation, and continuously developing Pratt Miller’s proprietary tire models and the Tire Plotter tool. The engineer will also be responsible for generating detailed tire reports and supporting Pratt & Miller clients by executing and analyzing tire fits and tools to guarantee accurate operations and performance.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Typical responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Parameterizing tire models using data obtained from both lab and track tests.
  • Analyzing flat-track tire data, outputs from tire models, and data from track and Driver-in-the-Loop (DiL) tests to evaluate correlation and produce comprehensive analysis reports.
  • Attending lab, track, and DiL tire tests to collect and analyze data, performing on-site analysis as required.
  • Collaborating with Pratt Miller internal teams and external customers to fine-tune tire models for improved correlation in desktop and DiL simulations.
  • Assisting in the development of innovative tire data models and analysis methods to support more confident vehicle tuning strategies.
  • Contributing to the ongoing development and enhancement of the Pratt Miller Tire Plotter tool.
  • Assisting in the overall development and continuous improvement of tire models.

Additional Duties And Responsibilities

In addition to the essential responsibilities, tasks related to the following areas will be assigned as required:

  • Attendance at Pratt & Miller internal meetings.
  • Participation in educational programs and training initiatives.
  • Providing valuable feedback on product needs and process improvements.
  • Supporting Pratt Miller initiatives, marketing events, and general company development as necessary.

Essential Knowledge And Skills

Desired Education

  • BS, MS, or PhD in Mechanical or Automotive Engineering.
  • Preferred background includes specialized knowledge in tire/vehicle dynamics.

Desired Specialized Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of tire data fitting from lab testing data.
  • Knowledge of the analysis of tire data as it applies to tire selection and optimizing car performance.
  • Knowledge of industry-standard tire models and advanced modeling concepts.
  • Strong background in vehicle/tire dynamics.
  • Proficiency with numerical analysis methods.
  • Proficiency with utilizing Excel and MATLAB and/or Python for data analysis and scripting.
  • Experience in the development or application of software toolsets or utilities.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and drive projects forward with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and writing skills for effective communication with Pratt & Miller Engineering team members and clients.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail.
  • Strong drive for quality in all work performed.
  • Possession of a strong work ethic.
  • A proven team player.

Work Environment/Physical Demands

  • Stress may occur periodically.
  • Long hours may be required at times, particularly during critical project phases or testing.
  • Limited amounts of travel may be required to attend tests, client meetings, or industry events.
  • Work environment can vary between collaborative group assignments and individual tasks.

Pay Range

$68,600.00 – $109,200.00

The above pay range reflects the minimum and maximum target pay for this position across all U.S. locations. Within this range, individual pay is determined by various factors, including the scope and responsibilities of the role, the candidate’s experience, education, and skills, as well as the equity of pay among team members in similar positions.
