Mining Engineer Internship Description:

This internship is offered within Cargill’s Protein and Salt (CPS) business unit, located in either Lansing, NY or Cleveland, OH. The internship focuses on gaining practical experience in either Operations Leadership or Maintenance & Reliability Engineering within the underground salt mine environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Learn to lead production or maintenance employees, project teams, and contractors.
Execute critical initiatives and projects in a fast-paced, underground environment.
Gain exposure to the people management and technical components of the mining industry.
Develop an understanding of the technical and management aspects of engineering.

Specific Focus Areas:

Operations Leadership:
Lead teams in a production setting.
Comprehend and manage MSHA federal regulations and compliance programs.
Participate in process optimization, equipment reliability, and capital projects.
Maintenance & Reliability Engineering:
Work with engineers and crews on active projects and surface infrastructure.
Learn mining techniques such as surveying, mapping, room and pillar operations, mineral processing, water management, materials handling, and safety best practices.
Collaborate with other team members on engineering projects.
Gain exposure to high voltage power infrastructure and automation systems.
Develop and implement best practices in maintenance and design for electrical systems.

Potential Career Paths:

Mining Engineer: Work underground and on surface, supporting mining operations and infrastructure.
Electrical Engineer: Focus on high voltage power infrastructure, automation systems, and electrical reliability.

Internship Details:

Duration: 12 weeks.
Location: Lansing, NY or Cleveland, OH.
Compensation: $25.00 – $34.70 per hour (based on graduation date and eligibility for full-time employment).

Required Qualifications:

Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Mining Engineering (MinE), Mechanical Engineering (ME), Electrical Engineering (EE), Industrial Engineering (IE), or other related engineering discipline.
Graduation date between December 2025 and May 2028.
Right to work in the U.S. (not based on a student visa or a visa sponsored by a third-party employer).
Geographic flexibility and willingness to relocate to Cleveland, OH or Lansing, NY.
Ability to work in an underground environment.
Proven ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Availability for a 12-week internship in Summer 2025 (May/June – August 2025).
Strong initiative and resourcefulness.

Preferred Qualifications:

Sophomore, junior, or senior currently enrolled in an accredited engineering program.
Previous co-op or internship experience in mining or heavy industrial settings.
GPA of 2.7 or higher.
Ability to apply technical knowledge to job-related duties.
Problem-solving skills and decision-making abilities.
Excellent communication skills.
Leadership experience.
