Description: Mining Engineer Co-op (May 2025)

This is a 7-8 month paid co-op opportunity within Cargill’s Protein and Salt (CPS) business unit, located at either the Lansing, NY or Cleveland, OH underground salt mine. The co-op is designed to provide real-world experience and prepare students for their future careers.

Responsibilities:

Co-ops will gain experience in either Operations Leadership or Maintenance & Reliability Engineering. Specific responsibilities will vary depending on the chosen path, but will involve working in a fast-paced, underground environment and may include:

Mining Engineers: Working both underground and on the surface; learning mining techniques (surveying, mapping, room and pillar mining, mineral processing, water management, materials handling, and safety); collaborating with engineers and crews; and leading projects.
Electrical Engineers: Gaining experience with high-voltage power infrastructure, programming, control systems, and maintaining electrical reliability for mining equipment (hoisting systems, pumps, conveyor belts, screening equipment).
Production Management Engineers: Leading people, processes, and production; directly supervising operators; participating in daily production meetings; ensuring MSHA regulatory compliance; and handling employee relations. This includes process optimization, equipment and process reliability, and potentially managing capital projects.
Process/Project Engineers: Working on business case development, vendor selection, budget management, and project management for major projects; focusing on process optimization, safety, quality, infrastructure, and energy use; and implementing technical initiatives.

Currently pursuings:

Required: Ability to work in an underground environment; currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Mining Engineering (MinE), Mechanical Engineering (ME), Electrical Engineering (EE), Industrial Engineering (IE), or a related engineering discipline; degree completion between December 2025 and May 2028; legal authorization to work in the U.S. (not solely based on a student visa or third-party sponsored visa); ability to work effectively with diverse teams; geographic flexibility and willingness to relocate to Cleveland, OH or Lansing, NY; availability for a 7-8 month co-op (May/June – December 2025).
Preferred: Sophomore, junior, or senior status in an accredited engineering program; mining or heavy industrial co-op/internship experience; 2.7 GPA or higher; ability to apply technical knowledge to job duties; problem-solving and decision-making skills; excellent communication skills; leadership experience.

Compensation and Benefits:

hourly rate: $25.00 – $34.70 per hour (dependent on graduation date and full-time employment eligibility).

Physical Demands:

The job involves moderate physical exertion, including bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects over 50 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds. Exposure to heat, cold, and salt dust may also occur.
