Media and Marketing Internship | Operation Smile

The Tone:
This is an internship at Operation Smile, located in Virginia Beach, VA. Operation Smile operates the Anthony L. and Hideko S. Burgess Interactive Learning Center (ILC), an immersive exhibit at its Global Headquarters that educates visitors about cleft conditions, safe surgery, and global health. This role is crucial for developing and implementing a communications strategy to share the ILC’s stories and strengthen its brand identity. The intern will also support the daily operations and visitor experiences at the center.

The TL;DR
• Role: Internship
• Type: Part-time, Temporary (minimum 3 months, 10-15 hours/week)
• Location: Virginia Beach, VA (In-person)

• Mission: To develop and execute a collaborative communications strategy that supports the ILC’s compelling storytelling and brand identity, while contributing to daily operational tasks.
• Tech Stack: Microsoft Office Suite, social media platforms

What You’ll Actually Do
• Visual Content Creation: Capture high-quality photographs during ILC tours and special events for promotional and archival use.
• Visitor Engagement: Interact with ILC tour guests to gather valuable quotes, testimonials, and feedback for marketing and communication materials.
• Editorial Support: Assist in the writing and development of articles for the ILC newsletter, contributing to regular communications.
• Social Media Management: Research current social media trends, create engaging content for ILC platforms, and track relevant analytics to enhance online presence.
• Operational Support: Actively assist with ILC tours, lead visitor experiences, and provide comprehensive support for various events and program materials.

The Must-Haves
• Background: High School graduate required; some college coursework is preferred.
• Experience: Prior experience with content creation and solid knowledge of various social media platforms.
• Skills: Strong verbal and written communication, proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, proven ability to identify problems and implement solutions, and the capacity to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
• Bonus: 1-2 years of customer service or administrative experience, and creative writing experience.
