About the Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL)

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC (FMP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation. NNL personnel are FMP employees working at four DOE facilities (Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and Naval Reactors Facility), at the U.S. Department of Defense-owned Nuclear Power Training Unit-Charleston, and at numerous shipyards and vendor locations.
For nearly 70 years, NNL has been dedicated solely to the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program, developing advanced nuclear propulsion technology, providing technical support, and training world-class nuclear operators to ensure the safe and reliable operation of our nation’s submarine and aircraft carrier Fleets. NNL relies on the dedication and innovation of its nearly 8,000 engineers, scientists, technicians, and support personnel.
Job Title: Summer Technical Internship (Mechanical Engineering)
Job Description
Naval Nuclear Laboratory offers internship opportunities for college students to gain valuable work experience during the summer of 2027. These immersive professional experiences are available in great locations, supporting the world’s greatest Navy.
NNL Summer Technical Interns will have the opportunity to work directly with world-class engineers, scientists, researchers, and technicians, who will provide real-world experience and mentorship. Interns will engage with state-of-the-art techniques in various areas, including:
- Researching and developing new technologies and concepts
- Designing and testing software, components, or integrated systems
- Developing models and performing data analysis
- Supporting operations and developing process controls and procedures
At NNL, interns are integral parts of a team, working on deliverables that directly impact the Navy’s nuclear fleet.

The NNL Internship is a 10-12 week program starting in May/June 2027. Successful completion of the program may lead to a return internship or full-time employment offer.
Required Combination Of Knowledge And Skill
Candidates for Mechanical Engineering internship positions must meet the following criteria:
- Pursuing a BS, MS, or PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
- Must have completed at least their first full year of college by May 2027.
- Must be enrolled and continuing in a degree program throughout the entire internship period.

Preferred Skills
- Cumulative minimum GPA of 3.2/4.0.
- Prior related internship, co-op, or work experience (paid or volunteer).
- Experience with the Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Defense (DOD), or Naval Nuclear Program.

Pay Range
$25.00/hour – $42.50/hour
Salary information provided is a general guideline only. Hourly salary is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.

- All candidates must be U.S. citizens.
- Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter.
- FMP is a government contractor and maintains a drug-free workplace and workforce. All candidates must be able to pass a drug test in compliance with FMP company policy and 10 CFR 707. Marijuana is a Federal Schedule I controlled substance and illegal under Federal Law; therefore, FMP is required to test for marijuana.
