Mechanical Engineering Intern or Co-op | Boston Dynamics

The Tone:
This is an internship or co-op opportunity at Boston Dynamics, located in Waltham, MA. The TL;DR

• Team: Atlas Platform Mechanical team
• Mission: To contribute to the development and sustainment of the Atlas robot’s mechanical systems, from individual component design to complex system integration.
• Tech Stack: Catia CAD, SolidWorks, MATLAB, Python, LabView

What You’ll Actually Do
• System Collaboration: Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team of mechanical, electrical, and software engineers to design and support complex robotic systems.
• Verification & Validation: Plan and execute verification and validation testing on both prototype and production systems.
• Feature Design: Design and develop new and novel features for existing robotic products.
• Troubleshooting & Sustainment: Troubleshoot issues, perform root cause failure analysis, and design/implement corrective actions to sustain existing products.
• CAD & Release: Design and release parts and assemblies using Catia CAD software.
• Documentation & Analysis: Develop and maintain product support documentation, including Bills of Material and detailed drawings, and support system design analyses.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Current student pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Robotics Engineering.
• Experience: Experience designing components and assemblies using 3D CAD tools, including simulations (FEA/CFD) and generation of detailed 2D drawings. Demonstrated hands-on ability to independently fabricate, assemble, and troubleshoot components and systems.
• Skills: Proficiency in 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, CATIA), high level of technical writing, excellent communication, and strong organizational skills.
• Bonus: Experience with data analysis/control tools (Python, LabView, MATLAB), exposure to various manufacturing processes (e.g., injection molding, castings, sheet metal), familiarity with ASME drafting standards (GD&T Y14.5-2018), experience with dynamic systems incorporating sensors, actuators, and mechanisms, and prior internship or experience in mechanical part design for product applications.
