DoD SkillBridge: Transportation Manager | US Foods
The Tone:
This is an unpaid, non-benefit eligible internship position with US Foods, offered through the DoD SkillBridge program. This unique opportunity is exclusively available to active-duty service members who are within the last 12 months of their active-duty contract and eligible to participate. As a key member of the transportation department, you will help lead a culture focused on people, safety, service, and cost through meaningful engagements with drivers and ensuring best-in-class service to customers. Your role is vital in managing personnel and driving efficient transportation operations to ensure the safe, accurate, and timely daily outbound shipments to customers and other distribution centers within the organization.

• Mission: To ensure safe, accurate, and timely daily outbound shipments by managing personnel and driving efficient transportation operations focused on safety, service, and cost.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Safety Leadership: Cultivate a safety-first culture by leading with a safety mindset, championing procedures, processes, and training to ensure the well-being of associates, customers, and the general public.
• Team Leadership & Development: Oversee and develop drivers and Transportation associates through coaching, training, performance discussions with Sr. Managers, and disciplinary action, fostering high-performing teams and encouraging upward communication.
• Operational Management & Compliance: Direct and supervise the productivity of drivers and clerical associates, ensuring accurate and timely daily outbound shipments, maintaining customer satisfaction, and adhering to DOT regulations.
• Problem Solving & Efficiency: Anticipate, analyze, and troubleshoot delivery issues, devising and implementing cost-effective and legal solutions while identifying and stopping waste to improve process safety and efficiency.
• Administrative & Accident Management: Oversee the maintenance of driver qualification files, effectively schedule working shifts using planning tools, and investigate all accidents to track causes and implement preventative actions.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Manager level with a high school diploma or GED required, focusing on broad knowledge of transportation/delivery operations, methods, and procedures.
• Experience: Minimum of three years in transportation/delivery or warehouse distribution, including at least one year overseeing a workforce.
• Skills: Strong leadership, communication, and people development skills; strong understanding of DOT requirements; ability to interpret financial and operational data; basic computer skills.
• Bonus: College degree preferred; prior experience as a driver is a plus; familiarity with inventory control, OSHA, and other regulatory requirements.
