Internship: Machine Learning Model for Local Gas Demand

Department: System Operations and Market Administration

Minimum Education Level: Sophomore

Preferred Majors: Data Science, Computer Science, Applied Math

Department Description:

The Operations Energy Security Team provides regular energy security forecasts for New England, looking ahead 21 days and beyond to the upcoming summer/winter. These forecasts consider a variety of factors that might cause electricity shortages, including:

Fuel availability
Emissions restrictions
Known generator outages
Timing of intermittent renewables like wind and solar

What You’ll Work On:

Develop and test a model to predict local gas heating demand using one or more machine learning algorithms in Python, based on existing local temperature forecasts.
• This local/zonal model will improve predictions for natural gas availability, a key driver in energy security forecasts.
Analyze and document emissions restrictions on New England generators by scraping public emissions permits.

Impact of Your Work:

The products of this internship (a local gas demand model and an emissions restrictions catalog) are needed to support planned improvements to energy security forecasting tools.

Skills and Experience Needed:

Python (intermediate or higher)
Coursework or previous research/internship experience in machine learning algorithms
Git Version Control Experience (preferred, not required)

Eligibility:

Completed at least the first year of college and currently enrolled in a four-year or graduate-level academic program
