Machine Learning Engineer Intern (Global E-commerce Risk Control) – 2026 Summer (BS/MS) | ByteDance

The Tone:
This is a temporary internship at ByteDance, located in Los Angeles, CA. The E-Commerce Risk Control (ECRC) team is dedicated to protecting ByteDance e-commerce users—including buyers, sellers, and creators—by securing the integrity of the e-commerce ecosystem and ensuring a safe shopping experience worldwide. This 12-week internship provides students with industry exposure and hands-on experience, fostering the development of fundamental skills and exploring potential career paths within a rapidly growing tech company.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Algorithm Development: Develop and implement innovative machine learning algorithms to manage business risks in ByteDance’s products and platforms.
• Solution Prototyping: Prototype and explore novel solutions, conduct experiments to validate hypotheses, and provide insights to Product and Tech teams.
• Process Enhancement: Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to enhance current automation processes and identify opportunities to strengthen risk defense solutions.
• Data Infrastructure & Metrics: Build efficient data querying infrastructure for real-time and offline analysis, and define risk control metrics to promote data-driven practices.
• Communication & Documentation: Document technical processes and effectively communicate results through writing, visualizations, and presentations.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Currently pursuing a BS/MS degree in Computer Science Engineering, Operations Research, or related fields.
• Experience: Able to commit to working for 12 weeks during Summer 2026, with proficiency in modern machine learning theories and applications including ensemble trees, deep neural networks, transfer/multi-task learning, reinforcement learning, graph theory, and unsupervised learning.
• Skills: Experience with Python, SQL/Hive, and Hadoop, a strong understanding of data structures and algorithms, excellent problem-solving ability, detail orientation, effective time management, and strong analytical skills.
• Bonus: Demonstrated software engineering experience from previous internships, work experience, coding competitions, or publications, and internship or research experience, especially in e-commerce or risk control domains.
