Litigation Paralegal | Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP

The Tone:
This is a hybrid role at Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP, located primarily in Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia. Katten is a full-service law firm with approximately 650 attorneys in locations across the United States and in London and Shanghai, providing sophisticated legal services locally, nationally, and internationally. This role is crucial for delivering advanced legal support and assistance to attorneys, ensuring the efficient coordination, management, and supervision of all aspects of complex litigation, directly contributing to the firm’s ability to serve its clients effectively.

• Team: Team leadership and delegation authority over Project Assistants and Paralegal I staff.
• Mission: Ensure efficient coordination, management, and support for all aspects of commercial litigation, arbitration, and mediation proceedings.
• Tech Stack: Westlaw, LexisNexis, The Bluebook, Electronic Case Filing (CM/ECF), Relativity databases, MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat

What You’ll Actually Do
• Document Management: Partner with internal teams and vendors to employ and maintain electronic databases for large case management, developing familiarity with key files and coordinating document retrieval.
• Litigation Research: Assist attorneys with complex caseload research, subject and topic research, and briefing of court cases, including local rules, information, and precedent related to venues.
• Motion Practice: Draft subpoenas, notice letters, and similar documents, arrange for service of process, and prepare draft responses to pleadings, interrogatories, and requests for admissions, while checking legal and fact cites for accuracy.
• Trial Logistics: Attend trials and complex hearings, providing administrative and logistical support, coordinating with vendors, venues, and internal/external teams, and assisting with document preparation for trial.
• Calendar Oversight: Maintain the docketing calendar to ensure timely filings, advising attorneys of status dates and changes, and summarizing depositions, arbitration transcripts, and briefs.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree and nine or more years of progressive work experience in the litigation practice area in a law firm environment, with applicable knowledge of judicial/administrative processes, filing requirements, legal research, court rules, and litigation terminology.
• Experience: Nine or more years of progressive work experience in litigation, including required trial, arbitration, or complex hearing experience. Must be proficient in Relativity databases for electronic document productions, Westlaw, and other Internet databases.
• Skills: Exhibit high degree of initiative with excellent analytical, technical, and critical-thinking skills; possess excellent organizational skills including record keeping and data collection; demonstrate excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills with courtesy and diplomacy; and have the ability to organize and manage multiple priorities simultaneously under strict deadlines.
• Bonus: Paralegal certificate from an ABA accredited paralegal program.
