The D. E. Shaw group is seeking motivated, intellectually curious students from all academic disciplines to join the firm as Legal & Compliance (L&C) interns. This is a ten-week program that will take place in New York and is expected to run from June to August 2026.

Job Description

As a Legal & Compliance intern, you will collaborate with members of the L&C team to explore regulatory compliance areas concerning the firm’s various trading strategies across a wide range of instruments.

What You’ll Do:

• Work on high-impact projects involving a variety of regulatory and compliance questions.
• Explore regulatory issues associated with the use of artificial intelligence (AI).
• Review outside research used by the firm’s trading desks.
• Monitor privacy law developments.
• Examine international financial regulations.
• Address issues related to employee personal trading and political contributions.
• Participate in the surveillance of electronic communications and trading activity.
• Investigate the potential receipt of confidential or material nonpublic information.

Who They’re Looking For:

• Highly analytical, accomplished students who communicate effectively (verbally and in writing), solve problems creatively, thrive on collaboration, have keen attention to detail, and are process-oriented.
• Candidates who are comfortable working with numbers and/or have advanced Excel skills typically succeed in this role.
• Applicants currently enrolled in a four-year undergraduate program or graduate degree program across all fields of study. Students who apply to this internship are usually approaching their final year of full-time study.
• No previous finance, law, or regulatory experience is necessary.

Compensation and Benefits:

• Monthly base salary of $9,000
• Overtime pay
• Sign-on bonus of $5,000
• Travel coverage to and from the internship
• Choice of furnished summer housing or a $10,000 housing allowance
• $3,300 stipend for self-study materials
• $4,000 stipend for personal technology equipment
