Junior Software Engineer with AI-enabled Development Experience | Leidos
The Tone:
This is an early career position at Leidos, located in Gaithersburg, MD; Eagan, MN; or Egg Harbor, NJ. Leidos develops real-time, safety-critical systems that support national air traffic operations. This role is crucial for modernizing the United Kingdom’s air traffic management platform by responsibly integrating AI-augmented software development techniques into mission-critical software. The work requires precision and reliability, contributing directly to national infrastructure.

• Mission: Modernize a high-availability air traffic management platform for the UK National Airspace System Replacement Product Delivery Team.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Software Development: Design, develop, test, and maintain software for real-time, high-availability systems.
• AI Integration: Apply AI-assisted development tools to accelerate coding, refactoring, debugging, and automated test generation.
• SDLC Application: Utilize AI responsibly across the full Software Development Life Cycle, including requirements analysis, design, implementation, testing, documentation, and code review.
• System Design: Analyze complex system requirements and translate them into efficient, maintainable designs.
• Automation: Develop and maintain automation scripts across development, test, and production environments.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or a Master’s degree. This is an early career role focused on software engineering for safety-critical, real-time systems.
• Experience: At least 2 years of relevant software development experience (with a Bachelor’s degree). Hands-on experience using AI-assisted coding tools for various development tasks. Experience designing effective prompts and validating AI-generated output, along with developing real-time, multi-threaded systems.
• Skills: Strong object-oriented programming; proficiency in C, C++, or Ada; familiarity with Linux (Red Hat), virtual machines, and hypervisors; experience with low-level communications protocols (TCP/IP, UDP, SCTP); strong communication skills; ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance; US citizenship.
• Bonus: Proficiency in Ada, experience with hardware or complex system integration.
