Junior Linux System Administrator – Top Secret Clearance

AMO, an Akima company, is seeking a Junior Linux System Administrator to join our team in Summerville, SC. This full-time, on-site position offers a unique opportunity to support the Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC) Atlantic Research, Development, Test & Evaluation (RDT&E) network. As a Junior Linux System Administrator, you will provide critical on-site Linux operational support to US Navy IPT programmatic and technical leadership.

This role is ideal for a developing Linux professional eager to expand their scripting, automation, and security implementation experience within a mission-driven RDT&E environment. You will work with both legacy and cloud-based Linux systems, contribute to automation initiatives, and participate in system performance monitoring and cybersecurity compliance activities within secure DoD laboratory environments.

Key Responsibilities:

As a Junior Linux System Administrator, your responsibilities will encompass various aspects of network infrastructure support, Linux systems administration, automation, and cybersecurity compliance:

Network Infrastructure Support

  • Provide functional and empirical analysis related to the planning, design, installation, and implementation of network infrastructure.
  • Perform maintenance of file servers and network devices, including hardware and software restoration.
  • Anticipate and mitigate potential attacks through network or other connections to ensure system security.
  • Collaborate with end-users and vendors to resolve network hardware and software issues.
  • May develop and administer end-user training to achieve efficient utilization of LAN/WAN.

Linux Systems Support

  • Serve as the on-site Linux support point of contact for US Navy IPT programmatic and technical leads.
  • Communicate time-sensitive system performance issues, identified risks, and proposed mitigation plans to technical leadership.
  • Monitor system performance across legacy Linux servers and cloud-hosted environments.
  • Assist with troubleshooting operating system and application-level issues.

Automation & Scripting Development

  • Learn to develop and maintain custom start scripts for various applications.
  • Enhance programming and scripting skills to support ongoing automation initiatives.
  • Assist in evaluating and implementing new tools and technologies to improve system reliability and efficiency.
  • Support configuration management and baseline maintenance efforts.

Cybersecurity & Compliance

  • Support the implementation and maintenance of DoD Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs) for approved operating systems (desired).
  • Assist with vulnerability remediation activities as directed by leadership.
  • Maintain all qualification(s) required by the Cybersecurity Workforce (CSWF) for PAA.

Qualifications:

To be successful in this role, candidates should possess the following:

  • Active Top Secret Clearance.
  • Bachelor’s level degree in Computer, Electrical or Electronics Engineering or Mathematics with a field of concentration in computer science.
  • 3 years of professional experience in computer design, software development, or computer networks.
  • Demonstrated experience monitoring and troubleshooting Linux environments.
  • Basic scripting experience (e.g., Bash, Python, or similar).
  • Ability to communicate effectively with technical leadership.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.

Desired Certifications / Training:

  • Red Hat Certified Administrator (RHCSA) or Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE).
  • Ansible Automation certifications.
  • ACAS Operator and Supervisor Course (cyber.mil). Note: Required per DoD standards to serve as an ACAS User or Administrator.
