About The Role

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Junior Artisan to join our machine shop team. This role is ideal for a trade-qualified fitter and turner. The successful candidate will support the efficient operation of the workshop by manufacturing and modifying components, ensuring high standards of quality, accuracy, and safety.

The Junior Artisan will work closely with mentors and engineering teams to produce components and prototypes, improve workshop capabilities, and contribute to smooth production processes.

Qualifications And Experience

  • Trade Certificate as a qualified fitter and turner.
  • 0–2 years of general experience in the machining of metals.
  • Exposure to manufacturing and machining environments will be advantageous.
  • Basic understanding of workshop practices, tools, and machinery.

Key Technical Skills

  • Good knowledge of manufacturing processes.
  • Good knowledge of machining processes and techniques.
  • Understanding of the machinability and limitations of materials for accuracy and finish.
  • Innovative approach to solving uncommon and difficult jobs.
  • Ability to continuously improve knowledge, skills, and workshop capabilities.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to develop a feel for the work required.
  • Good problem-solving skills and willingness to learn.
  • Ability to work safely and effectively in a team environment.

Key Responsibilities

Manufacture simple components to required standards

  • Successfully manufacture or modify simple components according to mentor specifications and approved quotations.
  • Consistently apply correct manufacturing techniques and workshop procedures.
  • Deliver components that meet required quality, dimensional accuracy, and finish standards.
  • Complete assigned tasks efficiently while maintaining focus on precision and attention to detail.

Deliver accurate work on higher-value components under supervision

  • Produce higher-value parts and products in line with approved work requirements and timelines.
  • Accurately determine and apply suitable manufacturing processes for general machining work.
  • Demonstrate continuous improvement in quality, accuracy, and efficiency of completed work.
  • Build capability and confidence in handling more complex machining tasks under mentor supervision.

Independently produce recurring high-value parts and assemblies

  • Accurately quote and plan manufacturing requirements for all assigned work.
  • Select and apply the most suitable manufacturing processes for specialised and recurring jobs.
  • Identify tooling requirements and obtain approval for specialised tooling where necessary.
  • Manufacture multi-component assemblies to required quality and delivery standards.
  • Perform effective workpiece setup to ensure consistency, precision, and efficiency.
  • Support and guide less experienced trainees where appropriate.
  • Develop CNC capability through tooling setup, jigging, machine observation, and programming training.
  • Produce specialised components, including multi-axis work, within specified tolerances and finishes.
  • Measure, adjust, and maintain offsets to achieve fine tolerances and high-quality surface finishes.

General Responsibilities

  • Ensure the workshop and working areas remain safe at all times.
  • Promote safe working practices among all employees in the workshop.
  • Ensure engineering and production work is completed on time and to the highest standard.
  • Maintain excellent workshop housekeeping.
  • Keep machines, tools, and equipment clean and in good working condition at all times.
