Job Description

About Canon Production Printing:

Canon Production Printing (CPP) is a global leader in developing and manufacturing high-tech printing products and workflow software for the commercial printing market. A part of Canon, a worldwide imaging technology and services provider, CPP operates across three continents with approximately 3300 employees (as of the end of 2022). Its global headquarters are located in Venlo, the Netherlands.

Job Description: Internship Assignment – Thermal Modeling for Wide Format Printers

CPP is seeking a WO student for a 5-9 month internship focusing on thermal modeling within its Research & Development department. The company develops printers for professional users, including a line of wide-format roll-to-roll printers (like the Colorado series). These printers utilize UV irradiation to cure ink deposited on a substrate. The UV process heats the media, impacting final print quality. CPP uses model-based approaches to understand how UV curing and ink composition affect the ink layer’s properties. A high-quality thermal model is crucial for accelerating print process development.

Key Responsibilities:

Understanding Temperature Behavior: Analyzing the temperature dynamics during the printing process.
Thermal Model Development: Creating a thermal model compatible with existing models used within CPP.
Model Validation: Matching the developed thermal model with experimental data.
Process Insight: Providing valuable insights into the printing process and the influence of various printing media.
Implementation Guidance: Demonstrating and advising on how to integrate the findings into existing experimental procedures.

Required Skills and Experience:

Academic Background: MSc in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related field with relevant coursework.
Methodology: Experience in combining experimental and computational work.
Programming: Proficiency in MATLAB and/or Python programming.
Thermal Modeling: Eagerness to learn and improve thermal modeling knowledge.
Personal Attributes: Open-mindedness, independence, teamwork skills, and inquisitiveness.

Benefits:

Professional Experience: Gain practical experience in a professional high-tech environment with skilled mentorship.
Compensation: Internship/graduation fee up to €500 per month.
Travel Support: Travel cost reimbursement (if not possessing an ‘OV-weekcard’).
Growth Opportunities: Potential for career advancement within CPP due to the diversity of disciplines involved.
Company Culture: A collaborative, innovative, and ownership-focused environment emphasizing empowerment and boundary-pushing.
