WTAE-TV Paid Internship Program
WTAE-TV, the Hearst-owned ABC affiliate in Pittsburgh, PA, offers a 12-week paid internship program designed for college students eager to gain hands-on professional learning experience in broadcast journalism.
Program Overview
This program emphasizes exploring all facets of the Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 newsroom. Interns will gain practical experience in various key areas of television news, including:
- TV producing
- Reporting
- News gathering
- All-platform news writing and editing
The Pittsburgh’s Action News team is dedicated to providing live updates from Pittsburgh’s communities, in-depth coverage of critical issues, and taking action for viewers while holding public officials accountable. Interns will be introduced to every aspect of news operation, such as:
- News producing
- Digital content creation
- Assignment desk operations
- News photography
- News editing
- Broadcast production
Interns will work closely with assignment desk editors and producers, with the primary goal of actively participating in newsgathering, producing, writing, and presenting news content.
Qualifications
We are seeking ambitious, reliable, and enthusiastic college students who meet the following criteria:
- Some classroom experience in broadcast journalism is required.
- Preferably, some knowledge of a television newsroom.
- Demonstrated interest in news through coursework or student organization participation.
Other essential skills include:
- Excellent communication, organizational, and writing skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- A strong desire to learn new skills and understand how a newscast is put together from the ground up.
- Strong critical thinking and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to demonstrate good judgment, resourcefulness, and confidence.
- Possess a positive, professional attitude.
- Possess the ability to pay close attention to detail.
- Willingness to work different times of day.
Fall 2026 Internship Program Dates
- Application Deadline: July 10, 2026
- Session: August 31 – November 20, 2026
- Weekly Workload: 16-24 hours each week
