Internship: Improving Inkjet Inks with Click Chemistry

This internship offers a unique opportunity for students with a strong background in organic/polymer chemistry to contribute to the development of more sustainable UV-cured inks.

The Challenge:

Canon’s UVgel technology, a key feature in their Colorado series of printers, utilizes UV curing principles for advanced printing. The company is seeking to make their inks more eco-friendly by exploring alternatives to traditional acrylic chemistries. This internship focuses on investigating the potential of click chemistry (specifically thiol-ene or oxime click chemistry) to create functional coatings on PVC or paper.

Your Role:

As an intern, you will be responsible for:

Developing and synthesizing click chemistry-based inks: Utilizing your expertise in polymer synthesis and click chemistry, you will design and synthesize ink formulations.
Evaluating ink stability and curing rate: You will utilize techniques like rheometry, IR or NMR spectroscopy to assess the stability and curing properties of your inks.
Analyzing the mechanical properties of coatings: You will investigate the mechanical properties of the coatings produced by your inks, correlating them to the properties of the ink components.
Contributing to the sustainability of UV-cured inks: This project aims to reduce the environmental footprint of Canon’s inks and expand the application possibilities beyond high-quality graphics to sustainable packaging.

What You’ll Gain:

Challenging assignment with skilled coaching: Work directly with experienced professionals in a supportive environment.
Internship/Graduation compensation of €500,- per month: Financial support for your work.
Travel cost compensation: If you do not have an ‘OV-weekcard’.
Networking opportunities: Interact with professionals across various disciplines within Canon Production Printing.
Hands-on experience: Gain valuable industry experience in a large, innovative company.

Who Should Apply:

Students with a research background in chemical synthesis: Preferably in polymer synthesis or click chemistry.
Experience with materials characterization: Proficient in using techniques such as NMR, rheometry, DSC, or IR spectroscopy.
Result-driven and self-motivated team player: A collaborative and proactive individual.
Available for 5-9 months for a minimum of 4 days per week: Commitment to the internship.
