Job Description:

Spokane County is offering an UNPAID internship as a Medicolegal Death Investigation Intern within the Medical Examiner’s Office. This internship is designed for students in an accredited post-secondary institution, providing work experience related to their course of study.

Intern Responsibilities and Learning Opportunities:

The intern will learn about the work performed by the Medical Examiner’s Office and develop skills required to perform the duties of a Medical Investigator and/or Autopsy Assistant, assisting with forensic investigations of deaths under the jurisdiction of the Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office, as well as assisting pathologists and morgue staff in the performance of autopsies.

Working Conditions:

The internship may involve field trips to death scenes with exposure to contagious diseases, bodies in various states of decay, and other biological and environmental hazards. Participation in autopsy work is required.

Minimum Requirements:

• Proof of enrollment in an accredited post-secondary institution.
• Sophomore, Junior, Senior, or graduate standing with a minimum 3.0 GPA.
• Degree in criminal justice, biological sciences, anthropology, or related fields.
• Effective communication skills in potentially stressful situations.
• Must obtain academic credit for the entirety of the internship.
• Must have the physical fitness necessary to travel over difficult terrain, remain standing for several hours, and assist in lifting and maneuvering human remains weighing up to 175 lbs.
• Sign a Confidentiality Agreement.
• Pass a background check.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Working towards a degree in Forensic Science
• Has successfully completed courses: Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, Forensics Practicum, Crime Scene and Medico-legal Death Investigation, and/or Forensic Anthropology.
