Position Summary: Health Sciences Paid Internship

The Health Sciences paid internship offers an invaluable opportunity for seniors enrolled in the Health Sciences Academy to gain practical, hands-on experience in an occupational setting. This program combines structured on-the-job training with relevant academic and technical instruction, preparing students for a future in the health sciences field.

Selection Process: Prospective interns will compete for limited positions based on employer requirements. The selection process may include:

  • Application submission
  • Interviews
  • Aptitude tests
  • Drug screening
  • Criminal record checks

Program Logistics: Students are responsible for providing their own transportation. To earn two units of academic credit, interns must complete a minimum of 180 hours of work per semester, totaling 360 hours annually. Performance will be evaluated every six weeks by the employer, and this evaluation will determine the student’s grade.

Minimum Requirements

  • Enrollment Status: Must be a rising Health Sciences Academy Senior.
  • Academy Standing: Must be in current good standing as a Health Sciences Academy member.
  • Academic Performance: A minimal weighted GPA of 3.0 is required.
  • Background and Conduct: An acceptable criminal background check, disciplinary history, and attendance record are mandatory.
  • Work Availability: Ability to work 12-15 hours/week, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, for a minimum of 360 hours (not including summer hours worked) prior to the completion of the internship.
  • Preferred Qualification: Completion of Anatomy and Physiology coursework is preferred.

ECU Health Duplin Hospital is an 81-bed healthcare facility situated in Kenansville, North Carolina. Its 15-bed emergency department serves approximately 25,000 patients annually.
