Job Summary: Graduate Nurse Internship – Pediatric Cardio-Thoracic Unit (PCTU)
This is a 6-month internship program designed to prepare a new Graduate Nurse for an RN position within the demanding yet rewarding Pediatric Cardio-Thoracic Unit (PCTU). The program features a comprehensive orientation, combining both classroom instruction and hands-on, precepted clinical experience.
Upon successful completion of the internship, a two-year commitment to the PCTU is required, with a minimum work schedule of 36 hours per week. Shift assignments for post-internship will primarily be Nights, encompassing both 8 and 12-hour shifts.

About the Pediatric Cardio-Thoracic Unit (PCTU)
The PCTU is a state-of-the-art, 20-bed tertiary care center that provides specialized medical and surgical care for infants, children, adolescents, and adults with congenital and acquired heart disease. We receive referrals from state, regional, national, and international locations.
Our primary goal is to provide exemplary nursing care, built upon a philosophy of family-centered care. We empower families to actively participate in the decision-making and care of their children, ensuring a supportive and collaborative environment.
Responsibilities of a PCTU Nurse
As a nurse in the PCTU, you will operate in a technology-intensive environment, utilizing advanced life support modalities such as ECMO, CRRT, and VAD’s. Key responsibilities include:
- Performing complex physiologic patient assessments for high-acuity patients whose status can change rapidly.
- Caring for patients undergoing the most progressive surgical and catheterization interventions for heart conditions.
- Practicing in close partnership with cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, and fellows.
- Providing individualized support and education to families and patients throughout their intensive care unit admission.

Hourly Wage for Registered Nurses:
- $41.78 – $64.81 per hour
Shift Differentials:
- Evening Shift Differential: $3.00 / hour

- Evening Shift Weekend Differential: $5.90 / hour
- Night Shift Weekend Differential: $6.90 / hour

Nursing Specific Info: Salary & Nursing Framework Level
This UMPNC RN posting is initially classified as Nursing Framework LEVEL C. The actual Nursing Framework LEVEL and corresponding salary will be determined at the time of hire. Nursing Framework levels range from Level A to Level F.
Required qualifications must be met for a candidate to be interviewed and considered. The posting may be filled after an initial 5-day posting period. Applicants who have previously left the UMPNC bargaining unit must include dates of past employment (months and years of service) and effort on their resume. Positions less than 20 hours/week may be combined.

Required Qualifications*
Candidates MUST meet all of the following qualifications to be interviewed and considered for this position:
- MUST be able to start on June 18, 2026.
- Must be a Graduate Nurse or a Newly Licensed RN who has not yet practiced as a Registered Nurse.
- Applicant must have successfully completed an accredited Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program.
- Successful completion of the NCLEX examination must occur no later than 45 days from the individual start date.
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification is required (either upon hire or within six (6) months of date of hire) or MUST be completed prior to the end of the probationary period.

Desired Qualifications*

- Student nurse clinical experience in a Pediatric Cardio-Thoracic Unit (PCTU).
- Experience as an extern or ICU tech in a PCTU.
- Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills.
- Highly motivated and organized.
- Demonstrated leadership abilities.
- Takes initiative in seeking professional growth.
- Demonstrates expertise in communication and problem-solving skills, as evidenced by interviews, documentation, writing skills, and references.
- Overall GPA of 3.5 or higher.
Work Schedule
- Hours per week: 36
- Shift/Hours/Days: Night shift, 8 & 12 hour shifts; Monday through Friday and rotating weekends.
- Location: Mott Children’s Hospital – Pediatric Cardio-Thoracic Unit (PCTU).
Note: All new employees will be expected to float to a designated unit(s) during times of low census.
