Job Summary
Children’s Emergency Services (CES) at CS Mott Children’s Hospital serves as the primary entry point for children aged 0-20. This facility is a verified Level One pediatric trauma center and a tertiary facility, receiving referrals from across the state. The department has been recognized with the Lantern Award for nursing excellence.
CES is a state-of-the-art, 41-bed pediatric emergency department, which includes a 6-bed observation unit, located within the new children’s hospital.
CES nurses collaborate closely with board-certified pediatric emergency medicine faculty and pediatric residents to deliver expert family-centered care to over 40,000 children annually. Patients present with a wide range of acuities, from minor injuries and illnesses to critical care needs.
The department demonstrates a strong commitment to its nurses by providing financial support for certifications such as ENPC, ACLS, PALS, TNCC, and CPEN. Additionally, comprehensive in-depth orientation and ongoing continuing education are provided.
CES Graduate Nurse Internship Program
This program is an approximately six (6) months total interval spaced internship designed to prepare new Graduate Nurses for an RN position specifically within Children’s Emergency Services (CES). Orientation encompasses a blend of classroom instruction and precepted clinical experience.
A two-year commitment to CES is required following the successful completion of the internship program. During the internship, Graduate Nurses will work various shifts (day, evening, or night) based on preceptor availability. A definitive shift assignment will be made upon successful completion of the internship.
Important Date: Candidates must be available to start the Internship on July 9, 2026.

Responsibilities
This is a fast-paced and challenging position within an academic environment, with a full commitment to maintaining excellence in family-centered pediatric emergency care. Major responsibilities include:
- Providing safe and efficient nursing care to children of all ages and pediatric specialties experiencing emergent or urgent situations.
- Assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the care of the pediatric emergency patient.
- Delivering Patient & Family Centered Care through collaboration with all members of the healthcare team to meet the complex care requirements of the emergency pediatric population.
- Demonstrating competence in the implementation of technical skills required for pediatric emergency patient care, adhering to UMHS policies, procedures, and standards.
- Exhibiting critical thinking skills, evidenced by rapid decision-making processes in emergency situations.
- Maintaining full compliance with documentation practices while providing pediatric emergency care.
- Assuming leadership responsibilities in teamwork and pediatric patient care delivery.
- Demonstrating awareness of the importance of research and evidence-based practice in the care of the emergency pediatric patient.
- Identifying and assuming responsibility for one’s own learning needs.
- Actively participating in quality improvement projects and initiatives related to pediatric emergency patient care.
Nursing Specific Information
This UMPNC RN posting is categorized as Nursing Framework LEVEL C. The actual Nursing Framework LEVEL and salary will be determined at the time of hire. Nursing Framework levels range from Level A to Level F.
Internship candidates will have a 5% payrate deduction while in the Internship, as per the UMPNC contract.

Required Qualifications
- Successful completion of an accredited BSN program.
- The candidate must be a Graduate Nurse or newly licensed in the State of Michigan as a Registered Nurse, and must not have yet practiced as a Registered Nurse.
- Successful completion of the NCLEX must occur no later than 45 days from the individual start date for those hired as a Graduate Nurse.
- Successful candidates must obtain ACLS and PALS during orientation. Additionally, Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC) and Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) certification must be obtained within 6 months post-orientation to maintain the position. These certifications will be facilitated through UMHS Emergency Department.
- Must be able to start the Internship on July 9, 2026.

Desired Qualifications
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are desired.
- Experience as an Emergency Department, ICU Tech, or a Paramedic is desired.
- Overall GPA of 3.5 or higher is desired.
Work Schedule
- Hours per week: 40
- Shift: 8 & 12-hour shifts to be determined at the end of the internship; two of four weekends per four-week scheduling period.
- Location: Mott Children’s Hospital – Children’s Emergency Services.
All new employees will be expected to float to designated unit(s) during times of low census.
