Job Summary

The New Student Programs Department at NC State University is seeking a Graduate Intern for Summer Start. This temporary position is designed for a graduate student to provide crucial support in the coordination and implementation of Summer Start, a residential summer transition initiative for incoming NC State students. The intern will assist in planning and executing co-curricular programming, contribute to the development of undergraduate student staff, and help create programs specifically for underrepresented student populations.

The position is scheduled from May 14, 2026, until August 1, 2026, with flexible dates, and aims to employ a graduate student who has completed at least one year of a relevant master’s program.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the planning and implementation of initiatives and programs aimed at the transitional success of first-year and transfer students.
  • Co-supervise a team of Summer Start Mentors (undergraduate student staff and one Lead Mentor), including weekly individual meetings under a model of team supervision.
  • Facilitate student leader training sessions for Summer Start Mentors.
  • Coordinate logistics for co-curricular programs in collaboration with various campus partners.
  • Collaborate in the assessment of student staff performance and facilitate individual evaluation meetings.
  • Communicate effectively with Summer Start participants and assist in program communication efforts, including social media, newsletters, and emails.
  • Plan and implement staff events, such as the End of Summer Banquet and weekly staff meetings.
  • Serve as on-site evening staff during select orientation sessions (typically 5:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.).
  • Facilitate a USC 100: Transition to the University Community course alongside the Assistant Director and Lead Mentor.

Qualifications

Department Required Skills

  • Completed at least one year of a master’s program in higher education, student affairs administration, or a similar relevant field.
  • Previous experience advising and/or supervising students.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a contributing member of a highly collaborative team of professionals and student leaders.
  • Demonstrated ability to actively foster a welcoming and inclusive culture for students and families.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

  • Previous experience working with student leaders and students in transition.
  • Previous experience in program or event planning and execution.
  • Previous experience in student leader or employee training and development.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to multi-task effectively in a fast-paced environment.
