General Labor Clean Up Crew | Humboldt Sawmill Company

The Tone:
This is an early career position at Humboldt Sawmill Company, located in Scotia, CA. Humboldt Sawmill is a part of The Mendocino Companies, which collectively own nearly 450,000 acres of FSC® certificated timberland and are the largest producers of redwood lumber globally. This role is crucial for maintaining a clean and safe working environment within the sawmill production areas, ensuring smooth and productive operations. The Clean-Up Crew directly contributes to the overall efficiency and safety standards of the company’s significant operations.

• Team: Clean-Up Crew, reports to a supervisor
• Mission: To ensure production areas remain clean and safe, and to provide assistance throughout the sawmill.
• Tech Stack: Chainsaw, Bobcat, forklift, hand tools

What You’ll Actually Do
• Keep Production Areas Clean: Maintain assigned sawmill areas free of sawdust, wood chips, bark, strips, and other foreign objects to ensure a safe work environment.
• Process Scrap Materials: Operate a chainsaw to cut up scrap lumber and broken logs for proper disposal or further processing.
• Manage Debris Flow: Utilize hand tools to move sawdust, chips, and bark into designated conveyors, bins, or a tractor scoop.
• Transport Waste: Operate Bobcat and forklift machinery to transport collected debris to conveyors or appropriate disposal sites.
• Support Mill Operations: Assist with various sawmill tasks, including pulling strips off transfer chains, keeping lumber straight on transfer chains to the trimmer, and emptying garbage cans.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Early Career, High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
• Experience: 1 month of related experience and/or training.
• Skills: Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; ability to apply common sense to carry out instructions; ability to read and understand memos and write simple sentences.
• Bonus: Forklift license or ability to train to obtain a license.
