Job Description: Fleet Engineering Intern (Summer 2025)
Program: Trident
Location: Lockheed Martin Mitchel Field, NY (with potential travel to forward sites)
This internship offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the vital Trident Submarine Navigation system and gain valuable hands-on experience in systems engineering. You will be working on the Navy Fleet Ballistic Missile program, supporting the fleet and forward site field engineers on a variety of tasks.
Key responsibilities:
• Learning about the Trident Submarine Navigation system: Gain a comprehensive understanding of the system’s design, operation, and maintenance.
• Supporting the fleet: Assist in daily maintenance schedule reporting, refit submarine tasks, advanced support for inboard and outboard maintenance, and problem investigation and troubleshooting tasks.
• Contributing to the operational life-cycle maintenance of the SSBN SWS Navigation subsystem.
Ideal Candidate:
• College Sophomore or Junior: Pursuing a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline. Equivalent experience/combined education will also be considered.
• Hands-on experience: Proven academic or professional experience assembling systems (hardware components/robotics).
• Understanding of system design and architecture: Basic knowledge of system design and architecture principles.
• Technical skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• US Citizenship: Required due to the need for a government security clearance. This position is located at a facility that requires special access.
Desired Skills:
• Experience reading and understanding schematics.
• Knowledge of estimation and control theory: Familiarity with Kalman filtering and smoothing.
• Systems engineering principles: Understanding of system and component specifications, requirement flow-down, allocation, validation, and verification processes.
This is a full-time summer internship with the potential for on-site work at Lockheed Martin Mitchel Field, NY, and potential travel to forward sites.
