This position offers a dynamic opportunity for an aspiring professional to gain hands-on experience in the fields of construction materials testing, contributing to critical engineering and technical projects nationwide.

Job Summary:

The Field & Laboratory Testing Technician will play a crucial role in ensuring the quality and integrity of construction materials. This position primarily involves conducting various field and laboratory tests on concrete, soil, asphalt, and aggregates. Under the guidance of experienced professionals, the technician will contribute to essential projects by accurately performing tests, assisting senior staff, and maintaining equipment and facilities. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual with a strong academic background in a science or related engineering field who is nearing completion of their Bachelor’s degree and is eager to develop a career in materials testing and engineering consulting.

Key Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Perform Sampling and Testing: Execute field and laboratory tests on construction materials such as concrete, soil, asphalt, and aggregates strictly following established ASTM, AASHTO, and client-specific procedures and standards. This includes performing tasks like density tests, moisture content, compaction tests, concrete slump and air content, and preparing samples for further analysis.
  • Provide Assistance: Actively support other field and/or laboratory personnel with various tasks, ensuring projects run smoothly and efficiently. This may involve aiding in complex test setups, data collection, or report preparation.
  • Logistics and Equipment Support: Efficiently transport equipment, material specimens, and important documents to various locations, including field sites, laboratories, client offices, or other Terracon branches. Provide physical assistance in the setup and breakdown of testing equipment at job sites.
  • Maintain Cleanliness and Organization: Take responsibility for cleaning and maintaining testing equipment, company vehicles, and designated work areas within the laboratory and field, ensuring a safe and organized working environment.
  • General Technical Support: Assist other technicians, project managers, and professional staff on routine and non-routine tasks as directed, contributing to the overall success of engineering and materials services projects.
  • Professional Development: Be proactive in learning and assume a progressively increased role in training and responsibility through a structured development path. This includes learning new testing methods, operating more complex equipment, and understanding project specifications.

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: Currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree program in a science or a related engineering field. Acceptable fields include Environmental Science, Safety, Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, or Geology.
  • Academic Standing: The ideal candidate will have less than one year remaining to complete their BS degree, demonstrating a commitment to academic excellence and readiness to transition into a professional role.
  • Skills & Attributes:
    • Strong aptitude for science and practical application.
    • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in performing tests and recording data.
    • Ability to follow instructions meticulously and work effectively in a team environment.
    • Basic understanding of safety protocols in a laboratory and field setting.
    • Physical capability to lift and carry equipment, and perform duties in various outdoor weather conditions and construction environments.
    • Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
