College Intern – Federal Affairs | Salt River Project
The Tone:
This is an internship at Salt River Project, located in Washington, DC. Salt River Project is one of the largest public power and water utilities in the U.S., providing electricity to approximately one million customers in the greater metropolitan Phoenix area. Since its founding in 1903, SRP has fostered a culture of stewardship and customer service, consistently ranking as an industry leader in customer service and named one of Arizona’s best employers. SRP continues to adapt to its changing business environment by seeking innovative ways to reimagine utility service and the provision of critical resources essential to the life and economy of Arizona. This role contributes to SRP’s mission by supporting the Federal Affairs team in advocating for critical public policy issues important to SRP, its customers, and shareholders.
The TL;DR
• Role: Internship
• Type: Part-time/Seasonal (minimum 15 hours, up to 40 hours per week maximum; typically 32 hours/4 days a week, Monday – Thursday, with optional Fridays based on Congressional schedule)
• Location: In-person, Washington, DC
• Team: Federal Affairs team
• Mission: To support the Federal Affairs team in representing Salt River Project before the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, Federal agencies, White House, and various electric utility and water-focused trade associations and coalitions on public policy issues.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Reporting: Attend Congressional hearings and provide summaries of key takeaways.
• Research: Research Federal legislation and generate written summaries and reports.
• Monitoring: Monitor media stories relevant to the team’s policy interests.
• Engagement: Attend events alongside the Federal Affairs team.
• Support: Assist with event planning, administrative tasks, and other office duties.
The Must-Haves
• Background: A high school diploma, GED, or equivalent is required. Must be currently enrolled in at least junior or senior year of undergraduate studies, or be a graduate or law school student. Demonstrates an interest in learning about energy and water-related issues and their corresponding policy challenges and solutions.
• Experience: Required to be enrolled a minimum of 6 hours each semester with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above.
• Skills: Possesses excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, along with strong attention to detail and a quick learning ability. Must be highly motivated and results-oriented with a desire to exceed expectations, and capable of working independently in an in-office setting.
• Bonus: Familiarity with Photoshop training is a plus. College-level coursework (100+) related to the position from an accredited institution is preferred.
