Job Description: Estimating Engineer Intern

This is an Estimating Engineer Intern position within Christman Building Innovation Group’s upcoming Summer Internship Program. The program is designed for undergraduate students to gain hands-on experience and prepare for a career in the commercial construction industry.

What You Will Do (Key Responsibilities and Learning Opportunities):

As an Estimating Engineer Intern, you will be an integral part of a high-performance project planning team, focusing on:

Project Planning and Estimating:
• Reading and interpreting construction drawings and project specifications.
• Surveying and quantifying materials from drawings (quantity takeoffs).
• Developing proficiency in 2D On-Screen Takeoff and 3D QTO technologies, and the company’s estimating platform.
• Organizing quantity takeoffs for easy auditing.
• Estimating interiors and learning basic structural/civil estimating from Design Development and Construction level drawings.
• Contacting and following up with trade contractors and suppliers for pricing.
• Developing knowledge of construction pricing.
• Making recommendations for software upgrades and database pricing changes.
Team Collaboration and Technology:
• Utilizing the latest collaboration software for document control and distribution.
• Learning how to build strong partnerships to support project goals.
• Participating in team-based planning, estimating, and problem-solving.
System Knowledge and Site Experience:
• Becoming familiar with mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems, and understanding their interaction with architectural design and building function.
• Participating in active project site visits to experience in-progress construction processes and apply this knowledge to planning efforts.
Virtual Design & Construction (BIM Concentration):
• Assisting the project planning team in developing 4D models (linking 3D models with scheduling data).
• Assisting with Facility Asset Management Models.
• Utilizing Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies in construction planning.

What You Bring To The Team (Required Qualifications):

Education: Active, full-time Sophomore-Senior level student pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, construction management, or a related field.
GPA: A minimum GPA of 3.0.
Experience (Preferred): Previous work or internship experience in the commercial construction industry.
Involvement: Participation and/or leadership roles in student organizations or extracurricular club activities.

Work Environment and Physical Demands:

The role primarily involves work at construction sites and in office trailers where project monitoring and daily decisions occur. The environment often includes exposure to sounds and loud noises from construction equipment, necessitating the wearing of protective equipment such as hardhats, safety glasses, and highly visible clothing. Conditions and temperatures may vary with weather and seasons.

Expected Physical Requirements (with or without reasonable accommodation):

• Occasional standing, walking, sitting, reaching (with hands and arms), climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
• Ability to talk, hear, use hands and fingers to handle or feel, operate a telephone and keyboard.
• Frequent lifting and/or moving up to 25 pounds, and occasional lifting or moving up to 50 pounds.
