Environmental Analyst I/II or Associate Environmental Scientist I | Schmidt Marine Technology Partners

The Tone:
This is a full-time, hybrid role located in Richmond, California. The San Francisco Estuary Institute (SFEI), a 501(c)(3) non-profit, provides robust scientific insights to decision-makers, policymakers, and communities, with over 30 years of experience in improving Bay-Delta ecosystems. This position is vital for the Clean Water Program, supporting scientific projects that investigate contaminants in the San Francisco Bay and its watersheds. The work directly informs policy development to prevent and minimize impacts on human health, wildlife, and other beneficial uses in the region.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Monitoring: Coordinate and execute environmental monitoring activities, including preparing field kits, scheduling, sampling, processing, and shipping samples, and following up with analytical labs.
• Program Support: Implement and coordinate program activities, such as scheduling meetings, preparing summaries, developing contracts, updating websites, and organizing events.
• Data & Reporting: Analyze and synthesize environmental data, creating visualizations, performing statistical analyses, writing reports, and presenting findings to stakeholders and advisors.
• Engagement: Facilitate community engagement and education through surveys, community science activities, and coordination with various stakeholders and partners.
• Communication: Support science communication efforts by updating the RMP website, contributing to newsletters, assisting with presentations, and drafting social media content.

The Must-Haves
• Background: A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, oceanography, environmental health, chemistry, biology, or another related scientific field, with familiarity in environmental science and environmental chemistry.
• Experience: Familiarity with field work, data analysis, and scientific writing, along with the ability to contribute to field work that may involve unusual hours and carrying up to 40 pounds of equipment for short durations.
• Skills: Excellent organizational skills for managing multiple projects and meeting deadlines, strong ability to collaborate in teams and work independently, excellent communication, presentation, and writing skills, and a valid driver’s license for travel to field locations.
• Bonus: Experience with collecting, processing, and analyzing environmental samples (e.g., water, stormwater, sediment, tissues) for chemical contaminants, familiarity with QA/QC procedures for field sampling and laboratories, experience with environmental data analysis and visualization software (such as R, Python, and/or GIS), familiarity with estuarine and/or coastal landscapes and ecosystems, and experience engaging with communities and partners.
