The Tone:
This is an early career opportunity with the City of Oregon City Police Department, located in Oregon City, OR. This is a full-performance law enforcement and crime prevention role dedicated to the protection of life and property. Officers are tasked with enforcing statutes and laws, rendering emergency assistance to the public, and performing standard crime and accident prevention duties. The role involves an element of personal danger and requires incumbents to enforce laws with minimal supervision, making critical decisions about arrests and the use of force.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Patrol: Patrol a designated area of the city in a police patrol vehicle or on foot to deter and discover crime, enforce traffic ordinances, conduct on-the-scene investigations of incidents, and render public services as needed.
• Enforce: Issue citations to violators of city ordinances and state statutes, serve warrants of arrest, make arrests on misdemeanor and felony charges, and complete necessary reports detailing alleged crimes, circumstances of arrest, and evidence.
• Respond & Investigate: Respond to reports of possible crime or traffic accidents, take initial action to secure scenes, administer emergency first aid, interview victims and witnesses, gather evidence, and arrest suspects.
• Aid & Refer: Investigate and assist drivers in stalled vehicles, assist pedestrians in trouble, interview persons with complaints, and investigate family disputes or child maltreatment, referring individuals to appropriate agencies.
• Departmental Support: Maintain contact with paroled criminals and suspects at large, broadcast and receive messages, process information requests for field units, and testify in court.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Early career professional with a high school diploma or equivalent GED certificate, prepared for law enforcement responsibilities.
• Experience: Previous experience in law enforcement is preferred; a basic DPSST certificate is also preferred.
• Skills:
• Analyzing situations quickly and objectively to recognize actual and potential dangers and determine proper courses of action.
• Communicating clearly, both verbally and in writing, with fellow employees and citizens from varied backgrounds.
• Reading and understanding laws, ordinances, rules, and regulations.
• Coping with stressful situations firmly, tactfully, and with respect for individual rights.
• Learning and using investigative techniques and procedures, including observing and remembering detail.
• Skillfully driving light duty passenger vehicles and operating computers.
• Physical strength and agility sufficient to perform the work, including the use and care of firearms.
• Bonus: College-level coursework in law enforcement is desirable. Intermediate or Advanced DPSST Certification qualifies for additional pay.
