About the Job: Engineering Intern – Airline Technology (Flight Planning Systems)
This Engineering Intern role offers a hands-on opportunity to support Airline Technology at FedEx, specifically focusing on the enhancement, analysis, operational support, and modernization of Flight Planning systems. It provides practical experience in various critical areas of enterprise application development, including application development, data integration, system troubleshooting, and Agile delivery practices within a large-scale corporate environment.
The intern will collaborate closely with senior engineers, analysts, and product team members. Responsibilities will include refining requirements, building prototypes, validating data flows, and supporting application improvements to enhance system reliability and operational efficiency. This position is ideal for students with a strong interest in software engineering, systems engineering, or enterprise application development.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist engineers with the development, testing, and documentation of Flight Planning application enhancements and modernization efforts.
- Support the analysis of system defects, logs, and data flows to identify root causes and propose effective solutions.
- Actively participate in Agile ceremonies, including standups, grooming sessions, retrospectives, and demos, contributing to sprint deliverables.
- Help update and maintain technical documentation, diagrams, and application support materials.
- Perform crucial data validation tasks and assist in preparing comprehensive test scenarios for upcoming software releases.
- Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams to gain a deep understanding of workflows, interdependencies, and operational requirements.
- Learn and apply FedEx’s established development standards, tools, and best practices in all work.
Required Skills / Qualifications
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a closely related technical field.
- Familiarity with at least one programming language, with Java, Python, or JavaScript being preferred.
- A basic understanding of APIs (Application Programming Interfaces), web services, or general system integration concepts.
- Demonstrated strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, and to work productively in a collaborative team environment.
- A genuine interest in enterprise-level applications and complex operational systems.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with version control systems, specifically Git.
- Exposure to or understanding of Agile methodologies.
- Familiarity with databases (e.g., SQL) or data analysis tools.
Minimum Education
- Currently enrolled student or a recent college graduate (within 6 months of graduation) from a college/university.
- A minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher is required.
- Degree Programs: Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Engineering, Business, Business Analytics, Management, Finance, Economics, Information Security/Science/Technology, Information Systems, Engineering, Statistics, or other related majors.
Minimum Experience
- No experience required.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
- Ability to work productively and proactively, both independently and as a part of a team.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
- Demonstrates strong interpersonal communication skills.
- Excellent time management, organizational, and multi-tasking skills necessary to thrive in a fast-paced environment, handling various tasks and changing priorities while maintaining high attention to detail and accuracy to achieve daily assignments and goals.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills necessary to communicate effectively across business units and to all levels of management.
- Ability to analyze, review, and make informed recommendations.
Pay Transparency
- Pay: $25/hour for undergraduates and $30/hour for graduates.
- Relocation Stipend: A $2,000 stipend is available for those relocating over 50 miles for an on-site or hybrid internship or co-op experience.
Additional Details
- Availability: Ability to work 40 hours/week for a 10-week program, from June 8th – August 14th.
