Engineering Intern – Airline Technology
This Engineering Intern role offers a unique opportunity to support Airline Technology by contributing to the enhancement, analysis, operational support, and modernization of critical Flight Planning systems. It provides hands-on experience in various facets of software development, including application development, data integration, system troubleshooting, and exposure to Agile delivery practices within a large-scale enterprise environment. Interns will collaborate closely with senior engineers, analysts, and product team members, participating in requirement refinement, prototype development, data flow validation, and supporting application improvements designed to boost system reliability and operational efficiency. This position is ideal for students passionate about software engineering, systems engineering, or enterprise application development.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist engineers with the development, testing, and documentation of Flight Planning application enhancements and modernization efforts.
- Support the analysis of system defects, logs, and data flows to identify root causes and propose effective solutions.
- Actively participate in Agile ceremonies, including standups, grooming sessions, retrospectives, and demos, contributing to sprint deliverables.
- Help update and maintain technical documentation, diagrams, and application support materials to ensure accuracy and clarity.
- Perform data validation and assist in preparing comprehensive test scenarios for upcoming releases.
- Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams to gain a deep understanding of workflows, dependencies, and operational requirements.
- Learn and diligently apply FedEx development standards, tools, and best practices in all work performed.
Required Skills / Qualifications
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a closely related field.
- Familiarity with one or more programming languages; Java, Python, or JavaScript are preferred.
- Basic understanding of APIs, web services, or fundamental system integration concepts.
- Demonstrated strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, and to thrive in a collaborative team environment.
- A genuine interest in enterprise applications and complex operational systems.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with version control systems, specifically Git.
- Exposure to Agile methodologies and practices.
- Familiarity with databases (e.g., SQL) or data analysis tools.
Minimum Education
- Currently enrolled student or a recent college graduate (within 6 months of graduation) at an accredited college/university.
- Maintaining a 3.0 GPA or higher.
- Degree: Currently enrolled in a degree program such as Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Engineering, Business, Business Analytics, Management, Finance, Economics, Information Security/Science/Technology, Information Systems, Engineering, Statistics, or another related major.
Minimum Experience
- No experience required.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
- Ability to work productively and proactively, both independently and as a valuable part of a team.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
- Demonstrates strong interpersonal communication skills.
- Possesses time management, organizational, and multi-tasking skills necessary to operate effectively in a fast-paced environment, handling various tasks and changing priorities, while maintaining a high attention to detail and accuracy to achieve daily assignments and goals.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills necessary to communicate effectively across business units and to all levels of management.
- Ability to analyze, review, and make sound recommendations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Immigration: Immigration sponsorship is not available for intern positions. Sponsorship may be available for full-time, exempt positions, depending on the specific role and federal regulations. Note, sponsorship is never guaranteed under any circumstance.
Pay Transparency
- Salary: $25/hour for undergraduates and $30/hour for graduates.
- A $2,000 stipend is available for those relocating over 50 miles for an on-site or hybrid internship or co-op experience.
Additional Details
- Availability: Ability to work 40 hours/week for a 10-week program, scheduled from June 8th – August 14th.
