ENGINEERING INTERN
Position Summary
Performs civil engineering work in compliance with established practices and procedures. This role operates under the direct supervision of the Director of Public Works.
The standard work week for this position is 37.5 hours. However, flexibility is required as additional hours may be necessary for project management, inspection, and related duties, such as during concrete street paving or sewer work, when a representative from the Engineering Department must be present.
Major Position Duties
- Civil Engineering Work: Perform various civil engineering tasks including drafting and updating maps, conducting surveys, and setting house and sidewalk elevations.
- Construction Inspections: Conduct construction inspections for public works projects to ensure compliance and quality.
- CAD and GIS Drawing Creation: Create both construction and record drawings utilizing industry-standard software such as AutoCAD and G.I.S. programs.
- Engineering Studies Support: Assist with and/or prepare portions of engineering studies and research for use by the department, city authorities, city agencies, and/or the general public.
- Other Duties: Perform other duties as assigned, contributing to the overall objectives of the department.
Qualifications
Candidates should possess Civil Engineering undergraduate coursework, previous experience in construction inspection, or an equivalent combination of training and experience that demonstrates the following essential knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Knowledge & Experience: Demonstrated knowledge of civil engineering, surveying principles, and construction inspection practices, crucial for assisting in the preparation of plans and overseeing the construction of public works projects.
- Technical Skills (Preferred): Experience and/or training with industry-standard software including AutoCAD and ESRI GIS products is preferred.
- Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential to develop and maintain effective public and working relations, respond to inquiries and complaints professionally, and prepare clear technical and administrative reports.
Pay Rate
$17.44 per hour
